Peacemaker Season 2 Image Teases Mysterious New Character in the DCU Series

As a longtime enthusiast of both comic books and James Gunn’s cinematic vision, I find myself captivated by the tantalizing mystery surrounding the new character set to join the Peacemaker Season 2 cast. With Gunn’s penchant for drawing inspiration from the DC Animated Universe, my curiosity is piqued by the possibility of seeing Apache Chief/Long Shadow, a character I remember vividly from my childhood Super Friends days.

As a die-hard film fan, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! A fresh snapshot from the upcoming season 2 of Peacemaker has been unveiled, hinting at the possible inclusion of a character straight out of DC Comics lore. The production for Peacemaker season 2 is currently underway and is scheduled to premiere on Max in 2025, coinciding with James Gunn’s Superman reboot that marks the beginning of the new DCU.

On the platform X, Gunn uploaded a fresh snapshot from the upcoming season 2 of ‘Peacemaker’, featuring an enigmatic character. In the image, taken by the firelight, the character’s back is visible, with their braided hair and what seems to be traditional Native American attire. The caption asks, “Who could this be? #Peacemaker”.

Initial thoughts among fans quickly centered around the character of Apache Chief, a Native American superhero originally from the animated series Superfriends. This character possessed an ability to grow in size, much like Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinatic Universe. Due to the questionable racial portrayal of the original character, DC Comics revamped him into two new characters: Long Shadow on Justice League Unlimited and Tye Longshadow on Young Justice. Both characters draw inspiration from Apache Chief, as they both share the power to enlarge themselves. In Justice League Unlimited, Long Shadow is a genetically-altered superhero, whereas Tye Longshadow maintains the character’s Native American heritage but is portrayed as a young teenager.

Who Else Could the Mysterious Character Be?

It’s quite plausible that the character Long Shadow, similar to Apache Chief/Long Shadow, is a choice Gunn might make, considering he was a child during the airing of Super Friends, and his inclination towards significant roles for John Stewart’s Green Lantern and Hawkgirl in the DCU hints at potential influence from the DC Animated Universe like Justice League Unlimited on his Justice League team composition. Long Shadow could add an exciting twist to the Peacemaker cast, potentially leading to fresh interactions. However, there are other DC characters that could also fit this role.

One fan theory that has popped up is it could be the DC hero Warlord. Created by Mike Grell and debuting in 1st Issue Special #8 from 1975, Warlord’s real name is Travis Morgan, a U.S. Air Force pilot who accidentally lands in an underground world known as Skaratis and becomes a freedom fighter for their people. He is a sword and sorcery character and relatively obscure, the exact type of character Gunn likes to adapt. If Warlord returned to Earth after his trips in Skaratis, it would make for some culture shock comedy and also provide a new piece of lore to introduce to Gunn’s DCU, which by the name “Gods and Monsters” seems to imply an exploration into something ancient and otherworldly.

Based on the character’s distinctive white hair, another possibility could be Resurrection Man. Introduced by Andy Lanning, Dan Abnett, and Jackson Guice in Resurrection Man #1 (1997), this character strays from the typical superhero mold. As his name suggests, each time Mitchell “Mitch” Shelley dies, he is reborn with a new ability while an earlier one fades away. The creators of Resurrection Man are renowned for reviving the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2008 and serving as inspiration for James Gunn’s Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy. Given that they are two of the minds behind Gunn’s most successful franchise and the cult following and unique powerset of Resurrection Man, he is an ideal candidate for inclusion. Any one of these three characters would be thrilling additions to the DCU, which is currently expanding rapidly with new characters.
