As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours glued to screens of all shapes and sizes, I can confidently say that the Summer Olympics this year have been a game-changer for streaming platforms, especially Peacock! With its impressive 2.1% share of TV usage during the Olympic period, it’s clear that NBC has hit a home run with their coverage.
In August, Peacock achieved its highest usage ever in the U.S., holding the biggest slice of streaming television pie during that period, a record for the platform since it was established four years ago, all thanks to the Summer Olympics.
During the Olympic coverage period (July 29 to Aug. 25), streaming service Peacock saw a significant increase in TV usage, rising from 1.5% in July to 2.1% in August. This is a record high for the platform, which typically accounts for around 1.3% of all TV use over the past year. The August figure encompasses nearly all days of the Olympics and approximately 19 billion minutes out of the total 23.5 billion viewing minutes on Peacock during the games.
As a dedicated viewer, I can confidently say that the Olympics were a massive success for NBC. Not only did they deliver 19 of the largest broadcasts of the month, but an impressive 17 of these telecasts attracted over 10 million viewers on average. This goes to show the captivating allure of the Olympic Games. Interestingly, broadcasters as a whole dominated television usage in August, accounting for 22% of total TV use – a significant increase from July’s 20.3%.
Monthly TV viewing increased by 8%, largely due to the two-week span of Olympic coverage. Streaming accounted for 41% of all usage, but it saw a slight drop of 0.4 points, as did cable use at 26.3%. Furthermore, other forms of TV usage such as gaming and physical media playback decreased from 11.6% in July to 10.7% in the current month.
YouTube maintained its position as the top individual streaming platform for the second consecutive month, accounting for over 10% of all television viewing during August, specifically 10.6%, compared to 10.4% in July. Meanwhile, Disney+ showed an incremental increase, rising by two tenths of a percentage point.
