As a fervent admirer of the avant-garde, I find myself utterly captivated by Lee Kun-Yong’s mesmerizing exhibition at Pace Gallery. His life and work, rooted deeply in the tumultuous era of 1970s Korea, resonate profoundly with me, a fellow traveler who’s also found inspiration amidst societal upheaval.
The Pace Gallery’s newest film highlights Lee Kun-Yong’s recent enactment of ‘Snail’s Gallop‘, which is being displayed in their New York location until August 18. A notable figure in the Korean avant-garde scene of the 1970s, Lee shares insights into his artistic journey, demonstrating his unique methodologies in art creation. “Artists’ bodies can serve as mediums too,” he notes, emphasizing this perspective.
‘Snail’s Gallop’ showcases the extensive collection of Lee’s paintings, live performances, and historical materials from his illustrious career. This is Lee’s inaugural solo exhibition in New York and his debut at Pace’s primary gallery. Since joining Pace in 2022, Lee rose to prominence during the 1970s, a period marked by South Korea’s struggle with authoritarianism and artistic suppression. As one of the founding members of the Space and Time group, Lee is celebrated as a trailblazer in Korean performance art. Although his groundbreaking performances are his hallmark, Lee’s creative endeavors encompass painting, sculpture, installation, video, and more—frequently merging with his live work.
