As a long-time fan of Jane’s Addiction, I was left stunned and disheartened by the chaotic incident that unfolded during their Boston concert last Friday. The band has always been known for its raw energy and powerful performances, but this time it seemed like the power came from something other than music.
The Boston performance by Jane’s Addiction on Friday unexpectedly concluded when their frontman, Perry Farrell, suddenly threw a punch at guitarist Dave Navarro during the rendition of “Ocean Size.” This altercation apparently occurred within the band while they were performing.
A number of people on social media platforms posted clips of an altercation that happened during the performance, where it appears Farrell becomes enraged and yells “You fool!” (or something similar) at Navarro, followed by pushing him lightly with his shoulder.
The musician appeared visibly puzzled when the vocalist repeatedly provoked him and eventually landed a blow. “What in the world?” Navarro exclaimed as staff members tried to hold Farrell back and escort him off the stage, urging him to stop. Navarro then removed his guitar strap and departed, thus bringing the performance to an end.
After the vocalist was unexpectedly pulled off-stage, I found myself standing alongside Navarro as his fellow bandmates stepped up to console him. The crowd’s heartfelt applause echoed around us, a testament to their admiration and support for our troupe.
Representatives for the band were contacted by The Hollywood Reporter, as the group has remained silent regarding the recent event up until now.
Instead, following the concert, Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, expressed her perspective in a detailed Instagram post.
It’s evident that there was a great deal of tension and hostility among the group members, which was what made them so captivating. However, things escalated when Perry confronted Dave aggressively, much like someone lighting a fuse on a stick of dynamite.
She went on to explain, ‘Night after night, Perry’s aggravation grew due to the excessive stage volume, which he believed was overpowering his own voice. Suffering from tinnitus and a persistent sore throat each evening, Perry’s patience finally ran out when members of the front-row audience began complaining that the band was too loud, and they couldn’t hear him clearly. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Perry.’
Etty Lau Farrell revealed that the band started performing “Ocean Size” prematurely, before Farrell was prepared, and he did the count-off. Amidst the loud noise and vibrations of the instruments, he had to start shouting out loud in order to be audible.
After Farrell tried to punch Navarro, it was reported by the singer’s wife that bassist Eric Avery grabbed Farrell by the head and hit him in the stomach three times. She went on to say that when a crew member intervened and separated them, Avery walked up to the stage front and apologized to the audience.
For about half an hour, Perry acted wildly agitated – he never managed to settle down, instead breaking down and sobbing profusely. As she explained further, ‘Eric seemed oblivious to de-escalation or perhaps exploited the situation, delivering a few underhanded blows against Perry.’
Jane’s Addiction launched their comeback tour in August. Earlier, they were scheduled to perform once more on a Sunday in Bridgeport, Connecticut, before the unspecified event occurred.
