As a follower who has spent countless hours laughing at the antics of Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast members, I must say that their revelations about what they bought with their first paychecks is as entertaining as the skits they perform.
After receiving their first big salary from Saturday Night Live, cast members such as Pete Davidson, Jason Sudeikis, Bowen Yang, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus shared what they spent their money on for a New York Magazine Instagram video series. In the humorous video, you can see how each comedian used their cash. You can watch this entertaining clip below, which is promoting their special “Reasons to Love New York” issue.
Davidson, who was a mainstay on the late-night variety show from 2014 to 2022 and portrayed the character Chad with a knack for seeming unperturbed, and made notable appearances as himself on “Weekend Update,” gave the most candid response. When asked, he said, “I don’t think you realize what we get paid. It’s around $3,000 per episode, so I guess I can cover dinner!
Some Cast Members Kept Things Practical, While Others Splurged
James Austin Johnson, who found himself quite occupied on SNL due to his spot-on Trump impersonation (and will probably continue to be for the next four years), expressed, “We acquired the least comfortable West Elm sofa ever. Honestly, it feels like it’s constructed from bricks.
It wasn’t just Johnson who splurged on furniture with his savings; Cheri Oteri, a cast member from 1995 to 2000, did the same and even went as far as to say she adores her couch more than Johnson loves his. “I’ve had it reupholstered multiple times,” Oteri shared. “One time, a designer came over in tears, saying the arms were too high and we should get rid of it. But I was firm, ‘Absolutely not! Not today, old Nick! The couch is staying, you’re leaving.’
Other actors shared practical buys too. Sarah Sherman, the creator of some riotously funny gory digital shorts, opted for “a comfortable mattress”, while Seth Meyers, currently hosting Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC, splurged on “a spacious couch” from Crate & Barrel and then grabbed “a large TV” at Best Buy.
Some individuals indulged in small extravagances with their initial paychecks. For instance, Sarah Silverman, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live during its 1993-1994 season, invested in a $300 cashmere sweater. Similarly, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, known for her roles in Seinfeld and Veep, who spent three years on the sketch comedy show in the early ’80s, splurged on a pair of shoes that were beyond her budget at the time. Likewise, Bowen Yang decided to treat himself with a pair of Gucci shoes. As he puts it, “The kind everyone had,” Yang explains, “and the kind I wouldn’t feel too trendy wearing today.
As a movie reviewer, I found Rachel Dratch and Jason Sudeikis’ responses to be refreshingly candid. They both admitted that despite their success on Saturday Night Live, they had to prioritize paying their rent above all else. In essence, Sudeikis explained that the income they received wasn’t substantial enough for large investments. He went on to say, “I think New York rent was probably the biggest purchase I made after writing on SNL during my first year.
Right now, Saturday Night Live is broadcasting its 50th season, and Paul Mescal, Chris Rock, and Martin Short will be taking turns as hosts for the rest of this year.
