For over five decades, Saturday Night Live (SNL) has graced our television screens, and both former and current cast members have been looking back on the NBC comedy show and the profound influence it’s had on their lives. Recently, there was a wave of nostalgia as the SNL: 50th Anniversary Special made its way onto the TV schedule this month. While many found joy in reminiscing, for some like Pete Davidson, these memories stirred up feelings beyond simple laughter.
At the tender age of 20, Pete Davidson auditioned for the silent SNL producers and secured an eight-year run on the show, along with unexpected fame. In the SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night docuseries (streamable with a Peacock subscription), he confessed that it was astonishing to see his own hope reflected in his eyes as he cracked self-deprecating jokes while wearing a Spider-Man T-shirt from Target. This sight, he revealed to Page Six, even brought tears to his eyes.
The innocence in my eyes made me so sad. Showbiz is so tough, and I didn’t know how tough it was.
Pete Davidson has been candid about his challenges during his tenure as one of the youngest cast members on Saturday Night Live, admitting that many of his colleagues were getting married and starting families, while he was mostly spending time playing video games with friends. This situation left him feeling incredibly lonely and isolated to the point where he asked Lorne Michaels, the show’s creator, to let him go from the cast.
Beyond the challenging initial phase of his time at Saturday Night Live, the actor from Bupkis has likewise been open about his battles with substance abuse, borderline personality disorder, and PTSD. He has acknowledged these issues publicly.
Opting for a career in an industry that doesn’t align well with my mental health struggles was perhaps not the wisest choice. As someone who often grapples with feelings of insecurity and sadness, I find myself in a profession that mirrors those same emotions.
Previously, he mentioned that his emotional state as a “melancholic guy” resulted in him getting approximately 200 tattoos, which he’s endured for years during the painful procedure of laser removal. However, he points out that the world seems to be more captivated by Pete Davidson’s love affairs rather than his acting roles in movies and TV shows. During the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special, the main headline about Davidson was a viral video suggesting his ex-girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, and him avoided each other.
Not only was Pete Davidson moved by watching his old Saturday Night Live audition, but it seemed that numerous comedians found themselves tearing up as well during SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night. Given the abundance of big names revisiting Studio 8H for this monumental event, I can envision a deluge of memories – positive and negative – resurfacing for many of the performers.
At present, Pete Davidson is set to lend his voice to Petey the Cat in the 2025 film “Dogman”. Also, keep an eye out for the hosts and musicians lined up for Saturday Night Live’s Season 50, which airs at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock every Saturday night.
