Cancel Culture isn’t what it used to be.
Over the last ten years, artists have been grappling with the potential consequences on their careers due to controversial issues. Making an incorrect statement or failing to delete old questionable posts could jeopardize their income sources.
This applies to artists as well as everyday citizens.
In the past few months, sanity seems to be returning, and the results of the November elections have brought back a feeling of familiarity and normalcy. As actress-turned-filmmaker Justine Bateman stated after November 5th, it feels as if we can take a deep breath once more.
You might want to know that MoveOn.org, a group initially established to support President Bill Clinton during the MeToo movement in the 1990s, recently launched a petition urging Netflix to terminate their contract with a well-known comedian.”
This version maintains the same information but is written in a more natural and easy-to-read style.
On stage, Tony Hinchcliffe shows no mercy; he’s the engaging emcee of “Kill Tony,” an unconventional podcast that allows for unrestrained, comical expression.
He demonstrated that his controversial performance at Madison Square Garden in the autumn, supporting President Donald Trump’s campaign, drew attention. His biting jokes, such as the one about Puerto Rico’s waste management issues, were amplified by mainstream media outlets.
Apart from Trump triumphantly outshining Vice President Kamala Harris, there was a notable turn of events. Meanwhile, the fame of Hinchcliffe soared even higher, and roast comedy experienced a resurgence on Netflix.
Earlier this year, they agreed to a multi-faceted contract with him, which encompasses a “Kill Tony” Netflix spotlight and a stand-up special from the comedian based in Austin.
Not if the flailing woke movement has anything to say about it.
Harsh speech akin to Hinchcliffe’s can lead to a more tense and unfriendly political environment. [Editor’s Note: Does there exist a similar movement criticizing the assaults on Tesla vehicles and drivers?] Media platforms play a significant role in shaping society, and they should take care not to boost hate speech with severe repercussions—particularly during times when immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities are experiencing an unusually high level of attacks.
Netflix boasts over 300 million subscribers globally, with approximately 5 million in the United States and Canada alone. The platform’s audience is multifaceted and has a wide reach within the country. It’s a breach of trust to both its customers and the public for Netflix to host a comedian notorious for his offensive, racist, and dehumanizing content, solely to capitalize on the ensuing uproar. Granted four comedy specials to Hinchcliffe is hasty, careless, and exploitative.
So far, the petition has 43K votes.
It’s highly unlikely that Netflix will change its stance due to the effort, given that the backlash against Dave Chappelle from ‘Cancel Culture’ in the past was much stronger than a single petition in 2021.

Under intense scrutiny from various quarters, even traditional media outlets seeking a symbol of free speech, and with Netflix employees staging protests calling for immediate action, the streaming titan found itself in a challenging situation.
Netflix held firm in their stance, informing staff that if they found issues with the content provided on the platform, they might consider seeking employment elsewhere.
The setback in Cancel Culture has been significant, making it less potent ever since. It’s surprising if the streamer gives credence to the petition.
