At present, the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) hosts an exclusive display centered around the works of Tokyo-based designer Naoto Fukasawa. Named Naoto Fukasawa: Things in Themselves, this exhibition is a significant U.S. debut showcasing Fukasawa’s accomplishments throughout his 25-year career, marking the first major U.S. event to highlight his contributions.
Over the course of his career, starting from his role as MUJI’s design director and continuing with the establishment of his independent studio in 2003, Fukasawa has emerged as a notable and impactful figure in the realm of design. The upcoming exhibition, Things in Themselves, will showcase a variety of his work such as completed production designs, studio sketches, and models for specific projects. This exhibit aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of his design ideology, which emphasizes the harmonious relationship between objects, their users, and their surrounding environments.
Additionally, the display features pieces from the PMA’s collection that are being unveiled for the first time, along with loans from manufacturers and Fukasawa’s studio. It will delve deeper into Fukasawa’s distinctive design approach, encompassing his concepts such as “super normal,” “outline,” “emergence,” and “without thought.
The “Naoto Fukasawa: Things in Themselves” display will continue to be showcased in the main building space of PMA’s Collab Gallery, running through April 20, 2025.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is located at 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19130. For inquiries, you can reach them at 215-763-8100. This museum is situated within the United States.
