Photographer Adam Jason Cohen Shares Unseen Images of Virgil Abloh In New Zine

As a photography enthusiast who has been fortunate enough to follow the footsteps of some of the most influential creators in the industry, I must say that Adam Jason Cohen’s latest project, “Chicago, 2019,” stands out as a truly unique and poignant piece of work. Having had the privilege of capturing moments for brands like Nike, NBA, Arc’Teryx, adidas, and even Knoll, it is clear that Cohen possesses an exceptional eye for detail and a knack for capturing the essence of his subjects.

Photographer Adam Jason Cohen has collaborated with an array of renowned clients such as Nike, NBA, Arc’Teryx, adidas, and more recently, Knoll, capturing their icons at the iconic Venice Beach Skatepark. His latest endeavor, though, is a heartfelt personal project: a zine brimming with photos Cohen took of Virgil Abloh in 2019, following the launch of Abloh’s “Figures of Speech” exhibition at MCA Chicago. Titled Chicago, 2019, this zine offers a glimpse into a significant phase in Abloh’s professional journey and serves as a touching homage to the city that held immense significance for the late creative genius.

Cohen shared that he had accumulated a modest collection of work during that period, which he then refined to consist of a studio visit and portraits. In simpler terms, he revised the images and narrowed them down to a studio visit and a series of portraits. The photographs contained in the zine depict Abloh signing his ‘Clear Art’ prints and ‘Figures of Speech’ book, as well as promotional materials for exhibitions displayed on the streets and L train system in Chicago.

Cohen expresses that there remains a significant gap in the creative sphere that needs to be addressed, and he believes that the images stored on his hard drive are underutilized – particularly since they could potentially spark ideas for projects he’s been intending to undertake. This is what motivated him to publish the zine.

In the year 2019, a publication titled “Chicago” spans across 40 pages, has dimensions of 9 inches by 6 inches, uses CMYK color scheme, is limited to only 250 copies, and is priced at $20 USD. If you wish to acquire one, the most effective approach would be to direct message Cohen on Instagram. Further releases may become available at selected retail stores and through his website in the future.
