Pippa Garner’s Body Shop Goes Bicoastal in New Double Exhibition

Pippa Garner's Body Shop Goes Bicoastal in New Double Exhibition

As a lifelong admirer of the avant-garde and all things unconventional, I find myself utterly captivated by the enigmatic Misc. Pippa’s work. Her artistic journey spanning over half a century is nothing short of extraordinary, a testament to her relentless creativity and audacious spirit.

Pippa Garner’s universe is always evolving, with very few things escaping her creative whirlwind. Her work encompasses a realm that perpetually transforms, breaking down barriers between gender identities, eras, and even human and mechanical entities. For many years, Garner has been on the outskirts of the art world, but at 81, she’s finally stepping into the limelight.

Stars together with Matthew Brown Gallery are organizing a two-coastal solo exhibit showcasing the innovative genius of artist Misc. Pippa. Through works in drawing, photography, and sculpture, this exhibition spans over fifty years, following Garner’s satirical masterpieces that turn ordinary items into extraordinary wonders. There’s a playful, surreal delight found in the intricacies of mass production within her creations.

As a gamer, I embark on an intriguing journey, starting in the vibrant city of Los Angeles. Here, I’m greeted by Garner’s fascinating 1969 human-car hybrid sculpture, “Kar-mann,” which sets the stage for her groundbreaking project, “gender hacking.” This audacious venture saw me modifying my body with hormones and surgeries, transforming it into a canvas for my innovative creations.

As a game enthusiast, I’d say Garner’s work cleverly turns industrial weariness into an engaging, witty delight, drawing inspiration from the realm of absurdism. The game Misc. Pippa is a unique blend, both critiquing and being part of American consumer culture. It’s sharp, subversive, and unashamedly innovative.

You can catch the exhibition currently being displayed at STARS in Los Angeles until January 18, 2025, while it is also on show at Matthew Brown New York until January 25, 2025.
