Pixar Unveils New Original Film at D23 & It Sounds Like a Dam Classic

As a long-time admirer of Pixar and Disney animation, I must say that the recent announcements at D23 have left me absolutely elated! The concept of “Hoppers,” with its sci-fi twist on a man and a beaver swapping brains, seems like an unusual premise, but as someone who has witnessed the magic Pixar weaves with their stories, I can’t help but feel excited about this unique venture.

For approximately three decades, Pixar has been a trailblazer in family animation, and whenever they unveil a new feature film, enthusiasts of animation pay close attention. Recently, at the D23 event, Pixar announced its latest production titled “Hoppers.” According to Deadline, this upcoming film revolves around a fascinating sci-fi story about a man and a beaver exchanging brains. Jon Hamm (“Mad Men,” “Top Gun: Maverick”) will portray the man who finds himself in such an extraordinary situation, while Bobby Moynihan (“SNL,” “IF”) will voice the beaver character.

Besides giving scant details about Hoppers, they unveiled a sketch too, undoubtedly capturing the animated pandemonium of this body-swap movie accurately. The artwork depicts one of the scientists in hot pursuit of a beaver, with a boy perched on some advanced machinery.

In the spring of 2026, it’s anticipated that the movie “Hoppers” will debut in cinemas. Piper Curda is rumored to join Hamm and Moynihan in the cast. Similar to other productions by Pixar, “Hoppers” is reported to explore the tender aspects of both the beaver and the human character.

Pixar Can Turn Unconventional Plots Into Emotional Classics

Pixar is renowned for creating deep emotional connections with viewers, and while Hoppers might not appear to be an emotionally intense movie at first glance, it seems that Pixar continues to strive to uphold its reputation of tugging at heartstrings. Despite the initial impressions, Hoppers is likely to venture into unconventional territories to evoke emotional responses from viewers, given that this studio has masterfully built narratives around diverse non-human characters such as ants, monsters, and even cars.

Many of Pixar’s most powerful films have the most fantastical settings and plotlines. ‘A man and a beaver swapping brains’ may not appear to be the most emotional plot line at first glance, but cutting several Pixar plotlines down to their cores — ‘a little girl befriends a monster in her closet’, ‘living toys fight over the love of their owner’, ‘a racecar breaks down in rural America’ — also simplifies them greatly. As Hoppers gets closer to release and as Pixar reveals more information about the film, the story is sure to seem more robust.

As a captivated movie enthusiast, I must say that this year’s D23 convention has been nothing short of magical for animation fanatics like myself. Pixar, in their usual fashion, left us hanging with the announcement of Incredibles 3, alas, without any release date or plot details to sate our curiosity.
