Pixar’s New Film Gatto: A Strikingly Similar Tale to 2024’s Oscar Winner Flow!

At the Annecy International Animation Festival 2025, Pixar unveiled an upcoming film titled “Gatto” with a scheduled release in 2027. The studio provided concept art and a brief summary of the storyline, but details are scarce for now. Notably, the artwork seems to have strong resemblances to the 2024 Golden Globe and Oscar-winning animated feature film “Flow“.

In a film produced by the team behind “Luca,” titled “Gatto, directors Enrico Casarosa and producer Andrea Warren take us back to Italy, specifically Venice. Here, a street-smart black cat named Nero has spent years navigating the mysterious waterways of this old city, filled with superstition. As he begins to doubt if he’s led the right life, Nero finds himself in trouble and owing favors to a local feline gangster. To escape his debt, Nero forms an unlikely alliance that could reveal his purpose – but only if Venice doesn’t claim him first.

The Black Cat Instantly Reminds People Of Flow

It could seem a bit trivial, but since the illustration includes a black cat, it easily brings to mind the film “Flow“. Both share this common element. In contrast to the animals in “Flow“, Nero from Pixar’s “Gatto” will undoubtedly have plenty of dialogue.

This movie’s plot revolves around Nero, who’s grappling with doubts about his life choices. He’s in debt to a crime lord, which unexpectedly leads him to forge an unlikely friendship that could potentially give him a sense of direction. The setting is the beautiful city of Venice, Italy, as depicted in the stunning concept art.

Both Flow & Gatto Feature Feline Leads Going On Emotional Journeys

The movie, titled “Flow“, narrates the tale of a cat attempting to flee from a devastating flood. It’s plausible that this flood is a consequence of global warming, as the planet appears to be in distress. Unlike other films, no human characters appear on screen; instead, various animals take center stage in this heart-wrenching story.

These creatures don’t verbalize, yet they collaborate when circumstances require it. It’s astonishing to witness enemies among animals putting aside their differences and assisting each other.

In the series Gatto, an unlikely bond might develop, making audiences anticipate a comparable narrative. It’s possible that Nero may find himself in an alliance with a canine character, traditionally considered a foe for felines. While nothing has been confirmed, it wouldn’t shock me at all if this were to transpire.

Pixar’s films are renowned for their emotional depth, often leaving viewers with tears in their eyes, if not a full-blown weepy session. This upcoming movie is expected to resonate deeply, as Nero will be exploring his inner self to emerge from these experiences a wiser feline. In other words, get ready to have your heartstrings pulled!

Due to both these films centering around a black cat embarking on an emotional odyssey, it’s challenging not to find similarities. Likewise, Venice is famous for its waterways, much like the floodwaters depicted in Flow. However, there are distinct differences too. It’s probable that the animals in Gatto will have the ability to speak, while human characters appear in the preliminary sketches.

Changes in Pixar’s “Gatto” are certainly possible at this stage, similar to how alterations were made with their movie “Elio.” If the team finds that the narrative is becoming too similar to the plot of the Academy Award-winning film, they may choose to make some modifications.

The Pixar film titled “Cat” is expected to hit the screens in 2027. As of now, specifics about the movie remain scarce, but it’s highly probable that casting information will be shared during upcoming events such as D23, where such announcements are often made.
