Playing Solo Tank in Marvel Rivals is a Miserable Experience

In Marvel Rivals, it’s not enjoyable for me when I’m the sole Tank character. The game becomes quite frustrating, especially when other players stubbornly decline to grasp the mechanics of playing as Vanguards.

From an individual who’s clocked over 2000 hours in Overwatch 2, it’s clear that a single tank character can decisively influence the game’s outcome. In Marvel Rivals, there are eight playable Vanguards, with five others capable of taking on the role – yet I find myself as the sole one bearing this responsibility.

Just a heads-up, at the moment I’m playing at Diamond 1 level (I know it might not sound impressive, but I’m still a beginner), and my primary characters are typically Magneto and Doctor Strange, though on occasion I switch to Hulk or Venom.

In different situations against various opponents, I’m flexible and adjust accordingly. However, constantly clashing with three other Damage Per Second players who stubbornly stick to their choices is draining. It’s either a peculiar mental block, or perhaps the clever matchmaking algorithm at NetEase, intentionally putting me through a grueling experience.

It seems like there’s always someone in competitive games who insists on sticking to their DPS role, even when they’re not performing well. And when you suggest a change, they often respond rudely or inappropriately. This can be quite frustrating and disheartening to see.

I love Marvel Rivals, but this is getting tiresome.

In Diamond rank and higher games, it’s common to have banned phases, which is a relief when players decide to exclude the challenging character like Wolverine from the game – otherwise, I find myself reduced to scraps. It’s comforting to know that they are taking notice.

In matches where Wolverine isn’t restricted, I must solely depend on my own skills to avoid his formidable Adamantium claws, and I constantly live in apprehension for my safety. Kudos to our team’s healers, but they can’t shield me from the unbridled fury of Logan.

Taking on a formidable Wolverine alone certainly has its advantages, but it’s a one-man-army scenario where you’re taking all the blows while others are picking off targets and waiting for their chance to use Q. This situation brings back memories of my Overwatch 2 days – solo tanking was as grueling then. The endless criticism and bullying about not contributing enough can be quite disheartening.

This leads me to Marvel Rivals. In a game that allows players to take on any role without limitations, why is it that no one seems to master the tanking role? Must I really endure this constant torment – absorbing all the crowd control skills, getting frozen, put to sleep, immobilized by squirrels, or having my spirit snatched from my body?

I find it aggravating, but I suppose that’s just the way things are sometimes. It’d be great if, just this one time, someone might consider, “Hmm, perhaps this person could use an extra tank to better support the team.
