As a gamer who grew up during the golden age of console gaming, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic awe when I hear about the Sony PlayStation 2 still being the highest-selling console in history. This console was my first real introduction to the world of video games, and it opened up a universe of adventures that has stayed with me throughout my life.
The Sony PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling video game console ever, according to updated sales figures from Sony.
30 years after its debut, the major player in entertainment celebrated PlayStation’s anniversary by revealing new figures on console sales, showing that over 160 million units of the PlayStation 2 have been sold. This is a rise of 5 million units from Sony’s last official announcement in March 2012, demonstrating continued popularity even after the console stopped being produced in 2013.
The Nintendo DS trails slightly behind the PlayStation 2 in terms of popularity, having been introduced in 2004 and selling approximately 154 million units worldwide. However, the Nintendo Switch comes close with a sales figure of about 146 million units.
In the world of PlayStation systems, Sony’s PlayStation 4 holds the second spot for highest sales, with over 117 million units sold. The original PlayStation takes third place with approximately 102 million units, while the PlayStation 3 comes in fourth with about 87 million units sold.
