As a die-hard GTA fan with decades of virtual crime sprees under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia as I read about the latest developments surrounding Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6.
Story Highlights
- Most of GTA 5’s active player base is on PlayStation 4, as per analysts.
- The last-gen console is home to most of the 20 million+ active GTA Online players.
- GTA 6 is only going to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
Based on a recent analysis from Gamesindustry.biz, Ampere researchers have discovered that PlayStation 4 boasts the largest percentage of Grand Theft Auto Online players globally. In fact, their findings suggest that over 20 million players are engaged in GTA Online, with the majority choosing PS4 as their platform of choice. This makes PlayStation 4 the clear leader in active user base for the game, a testament to its enduring popularity even after its launch in 2013.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but ponder some intriguing questions about GTA 6. With its release slated for next year, it seems that this highly anticipated game will exclusively grace the screens of next-gen consoles. Given that half of the PlayStation player base is still rocking the PS4, I wonder if the legendary franchise’s latest installment will convince us to take the leap and upgrade our gaming hardware at last?
GTA 6 Has Unmatched Hype
It’s no shock that GTA 6 is generating a buzz unlike any other, and based on its trailer, the excitement is certainly warranted. This upcoming action-adventure game is set in Leonida, a fictional depiction of Florida, where the story will follow Lucia (the first female protagonist for GTA since 2000) and her partner Jason as they navigate the criminal underworld of Vice City.
It wasn’t until 2022 that the development of GTA 6 was officially confirmed, ending years of debate about the game’s status and existence. However, later in the same year, Rockstar suffered a data leak when a hacker revealed a wealth of information such as videos, early gameplay footage, and more about the game. This information leak had a detrimental effect on the development process. Yet, nothing seemed to dampen the enthusiasm for GTA 6, not even poor testing footage.
In December 2023, Rockstar unveiled their new game, and its debut trailer smashed records unprecedented in the entertainment world. The teaser for GTA 6 became the third most-watched video within a day on platforms that aren’t music videos, and it also ranked as the fourth most-viewed music video in just half a day.
According to Take-Two Interactive Software, Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be released towards the end of 2025 on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and personal computers (PC).
