PlayStation’s Concord has a Marvel-Sized Issue Ahead of Launch

As a longtime PlayStation fan and avid gamer, I’ve been following the developments of Helldivers 2 and Concord with great interest. Helldivers 2 was a pleasant surprise this year, showcasing the potential of live-service games in a way that exceeded my expectations. The bug-smashing patriotism of Arrowhead Studios’ title resonated with me and the engaged community, not to mention the budget-friendly price and regular content updates, made it a standout experience.

This year, Helldivers 2’s release by PlayStation served as a compelling demonstration of their strategy for live-service titles, surpassing industry expectations. The acquisition of Bungie marked the beginning of this approach, but Helldivers 2’s affordable price tag, regular free content updates, and an active player base convinced many that high-quality live-service games exist.

Regrettably, the upcoming PS5-exclusive game from Sony, titled Concord, seems to be falling short in capturing the same level of popularity as Arrowhead Studios’ title with its bug-crushing patriotic theme. Blending elements of multiple hero-shooters and sci-fi themes, Concord saw a peak player count of 2,388 during its recent Steam open beta. Despite this being higher than Suicide Squad’s player base, it still falls far short of the success achieved by the viral hit PlayStation published earlier in the year.

Although Concord’s player base on PS5 and PC might temporarily sustain the game, Marvel Rivals, developed by NetEase Games with the Marvel IP, poses a significant challenge for the upcoming title. With similarities to Overwatch, this hero-shooter may draw fans away from Concord, potentially causing its demise before it has a chance to thrive.

Concord, which gets its name from Marvel, primarily differs from Marvel Rivals due to its pay-to-play model. The initial cost for the game is $39.99 or £34.99, whereas Marvel Rivals will be free to play. It’s frustrating that Marvel Rivals may adopt a character rotation system similar to MultiVersus upon release, but this is preferable to the mid-tier pricing strategy of PlayStation’s hero shooter.

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the numbers speak louder than words in this case. Based on the data from SteamDB, Marvel Rivals has already amassed over 50k peak players since the start of its closed beta. This is a staggering number that far outstrips the anticipated player count for PlayStation’s upcoming title. What makes this even more impressive is that Marvel Rivals’ beta codes are distributed randomly, while Concord had an entirely open beta during the second weekend. Given my own experiences with gaming and observing the trends in the industry, I am genuinely excited to see how Marvel Rivals will fare when it officially launches. It seems like it could be a real game-changer!

Certainly, numerous factors can influence the situation between now and the game’s launch. For instance, some gamers might opt for playing Concord on PS5 instead of PC. Additionally, NetEase could experience significant success with Marvel Rivals, leading them to alter their monetization strategy, potentially damaging goodwill before the launch. However, it’s concerning that a PlayStation-published game isn’t performing well prior to release.
