Please Let Us Buy Classic Pokémon Games on Switch

The upcoming Pokémon Presents showcase next week is likely to focus on similar topics, such as updates for mobile games, sneak peeks at the Trading Card Game, and possibly a reveal for Legends: Z-A. On its own, this lineup isn’t bad, but fans are hoping for some classic games on the Nintendo Switch. Many would love to see these games included in the Nintendo Switch Online service, but I’d be just as happy with them as $10 downloads.

The ports of Game Boy titles continue to be a widely-discussed speculation among fans, who are eager to experience these games on contemporary devices. Although the Nintendo Switch offers Stadium games from N64 and the TCG game from Game Boy Color, it lacks the classic RPGs that fans crave. It seems like an effortless way for Nintendo to generate income, as fans would gladly pay to play these games on their Switch consoles.

Many enthusiasts eagerly anticipate that next week’s Pokémon Presents could at last bring back our beloved classic games from yesteryears. Such an announcement would be a fitting swansong for the Switch as Nintendo and Game Freak previously revived these popular titles on the 3DS, which they often found success with. In fact, a couple of years before the 3DS’s online store shut down, we saw remakes of the classic Game Boy games, and these were consistently top-selling items.

Though contemporary games like Scarlet and Violet are quite impressive, I’ve got to say, they don’t hold the same magic as those old-school Game Boy RPGs did. The basic sprites and nostalgic sound effects have a certain allure that newer titles just can’t seem to replicate. It’s the charm of immersing yourself in a straightforward RPG with plenty of grinding that keeps pulling us back.

Indeed, it’s true that the Nintendo Switch hosts a variety of games that offer similar experiences for those seeking something like Pokémon. Apart from the revamped Pokémon Let’s Go editions and contemporary titles, there are also games known as “clones,” each introducing their fresh concepts. Games like Nexomon, Coromon, Monster Sanctuary, and Cassette Beasts offer elements that will delight fans of this genre, with charming pixel-art aesthetics to complement the gameplay.

Despite the abundance of games on Switch, we enthusiasts find ourselves repeatedly drawn to those timeless RPGs. There’s a certain charm about the old-school sprites and straightforward grinding dynamics that make revisiting them effortless. Each fan has their own approach, but I personally enjoy playing these games on an Anbernic device.

Independent of the content revealed in the upcoming Pokémon Presents, our anticipation lies in the possibility that the original games might receive a reissue. Whether it’s through Nintendo Switch Online or by purchasing them separately, having these role-playing games available on the Nintendo Switch would be perfect. Moreover, such games could also be playable on the Switch 2, eliminating the need to wait for a new-generation release.
