For numerous gamers, Pokemon has been an endearing title since its debut on early Nintendo systems. The mechanics were straightforward yet engaging: Capture Pokemon, assemble a squad, traverse diverse towns, challenge Gym Leaders in combat, and ascend to become a top-tier trainer.
For many players, the ultimate aim may be to conquer the game, but what truly delights them is discovering new Pokemon, mastering their abilities and understanding their evolution paths (should they have any). In Sun and Moon for the Nintendo 3DS, unique regional variants and forms were also introduced as an added excitement.
Contrarily, a recent leak on the forthcoming Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, disclosed a troubling fact: The game will forgo introducing any novel Pokémon species.
Despite the leak being vague, it could be disheartening if it implied that there won’t be any new Pokémon at all or simply no new Regional variants. Historically, most Pokémon games have introduced new Pokéemon species, surprising many fans. The predecessor of this game, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, did introduce seven new Pokémon, but it also provided over 10 new forms for existing Pokémon.
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it’s expected that Mega Evolutions will make a comeback. These transformations were initially introduced in Pokemon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS. However, they are just temporary changes, as after some duration, they revert back to their original form. Additionally, if the leak is accurate, Pokemon Legends: Z-A might introduce fewer new species than any other main Pokemon games so far, or it could be very close to breaking that record.

As someone who’s been eagerly waiting for more Pokémon action, I must say it’s intriguing to hear about this leak. It leaves room for optimism that we might see some fresh Pokémon species in our upcoming gaming adventure. But then again, it could very well turn out to be the truth – Game Freak might be saving most of the new Pokémon for their future 10th-gen game. And let’s not forget about the potential release of the Switch 2! If that happens, it could mean a brand-new Pokémon game is on its way, as Pokémon Legends: Z-A seems to be exclusively for the Switch.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a new game, is slated to drop for the Nintendo Switch towards the end of 2025, though an exact date hasn’t been given yet. It might potentially be compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, but it remains unclear if there will be any upgrades or alterations in the gameplay for that version.
