In the realm of Pokémon, type matchups are my secret weapons in battle strategy. Usually, a Pokémon’s appearance gives away its typing. Magmar, for instance, is clearly a Fire-type with its volcanic form. Lucario exudes an aura of Fighting and Steel types. And Gengar? His mischievous grin suggests he’s the epitome of Ghost/Poison types.
However, there are some exceptions. These are the unusual ones, the ones that seem to be a clever prank by the developers. They may appear to belong to one type, but they actually fight like another entirely different type.
Like cosplayers channeling powers that don’t match the costumes they’re wearing.
1. Solgaleo (Psychic / Steel)
Let’s begin with the iconic character, Solgaleo, who symbolizes the very essence of sunlight. This impressive lion radiates brilliant light and is a key figure in the game known as Pokemon Sun.
Indeed, a Fire type isn’t it? Wrong. It’s Psychic Steel. You got that right. There are no flames or burns. Just mental abilities and steel. Imagine if the sun chose to be a psychiatrist who loves metal rather than being a ball of burning gas.
The Steel connection hints at the concept of a cosmic device, yet there’s no Flame involved? It seems more like playful teasing from the Sun.
2. Lugia (Psychic / Flying)

Presently, let’s imagine diving deep into the ocean realms alongside Lugia, the sea’s protector. Living submerged, it commands the seas and their tempests, and is revered by the ocean’s creatures.
You might assume that Lugia would be a Water type, given its appearance. However, it’s actually Psychic Flying. The Flying part makes sense since it has wings, but the Psychic? And no Water? Lugia seems to have more in common with Mewtwo than Manaphy in terms of its Pokémon type. It’s almost like a scaly Poseidon chose to work as a psychic instead of a water deity.
3. Gyarados (Water / Flying)

As a gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the formidable sea serpent Pokémon, Gyarados. It’s strikingly reminiscent of ancient Chinese dragons, embodying an aura of fearsome power. I always thought it would be wreaking havoc with Dragon or Water Dragon attacks. But, surprisingly, it specializes in Water Flying moves instead. Quite the unexpected twist!
Not only does this issue compound the problem, but typing it in causes a fourfold vulnerability to Electric attacks. That means even a common Pikachu with Thunderbolt could easily take it down. Incredibly, a tiny yellow mouse-like creature could neutralize a dragon-level menace with such an attack. Harsh.
4. Charizard (Fire / Flying)

Speaking of Charizard, it’s indeed a timeless character, adored by many Pokémon enthusiasts. This fire-and-flight beast appears more like a dragon, but technically, it falls under the Fire/Flying category. Due to this type combination, it’s surprisingly vulnerable to Rock-type moves. In fact, a Stealth Rock setup can potentially reduce its health by half before it even gets a chance to attack!
A dragon, torn apart by stones, seems unfair, yet it isn’t truly a dragon. Fortunately, Game Freak acknowledged the requests of trainers worldwide and introduced Mega Charizard X, a Fire-Dragon form, which brings about a satisfying resolution to our wishes.
5. Psyduck & Golduck (Water)

One of the most unusual pairs are Psyduck and Golduck. In both video games and cartoons, they have displayed uncontrollable outbursts of psychic power. They often clench their heads, exhibit telekinetic abilities, and even become more energetic as dormant psychic creatures.
I tried to maintain the original meaning while using simpler language and making the sentence flow more naturally.
However, they don’t belong to any specific type. They are simply waterfowl, not possessing a Psychic subtype. Despite their behavior resembling tiny psychic calamities, their classification suggests they are just puzzled ducks instead.
In essence, Pokémon is a game that frequently prioritizes theme and story over logical consistency. Though inconsistent type combinations might be annoying at times, they’re what give the franchise its delightful quirkiness.
In the Pokemon universe, appearances can often be misleading, and types can add another layer of surprise to this fascinating world. These unique pairings leave fans speculating, chuckling in amazement, or shaking their heads in disbelief sometimes.
