Power Book II: Ghost Conclusion Teases Future Franchise Expansions

As a dedicated fan who has followed the Power universe since its inception, I can confidently say that Friday, Oct 4, was both a bittersweet and exciting day for me. The series finale of Power Book II: Ghost, titled “Ghost in the Machine,” closed the chapter on Tariq St. Patrick’s journey, but left us with a tantalizing hint at what might come next.

The final episode of the TV show Power Book II: Ghost, titled “Ghost in the Machine“, was broadcast on Starz on Oct. 4, concluding the popular crime drama series after running for four seasons. Yet, this last episode hints that the world of Power might not have finished with Tariq St. Patrick (played by Michael Rainey Jr.) as he receives a cryptic phone call, suggesting potential future plotlines – although even Rainey himself admits he’s uncertain about the exact meaning of this crucial scene.

The final episode hints at Tariq possibly continuing his saga, as he assumes leadership of New York City’s drug trade. In a scene after the end credits, Tariq receives an unanticipated call and offers assistance to a puzzled individual, indicating that his narrative may still have chapters left to tell. When speaking with PEOPLE about this moment, Rainey commented:

Initially, I found myself perplexed upon reading it. It left me wondering who this person was addressing and how they had acquired new followers so quickly. Frankly, it seemed everyone was against him. Still, I couldn’t help but question who exactly he was speaking to. I remain puzzled about the situation.

There’s a growing belief among fans that Tariq and Tommy Egan, the main character from “Power Book IV: Force,” may be working together in some capacity. When asked about this potential collaboration by PEOPLE, Raina responded, “Well, that could be a possibility. I mean, they’re family.” Tariq and Tommy had a strained relationship due to past events involving Tariq’s father, Ghost, in the original “Power” series, but their issues seemed to be resolved in the third season of “Power Book II: Ghost.” If Tommy were to join forces with Tariq, it could open up a new storyline within the “Power” universe.

Is Michael Rainey Jr. Saying Goodbye to Tariq St. Patrick?

In the initial “Power” TV show, Tariq transforms from a problematic teen into a crucial figure in his father James “Ghost” St. Patrick’s illegal business. In an unexpected turn of events, Tariq fatally shoots Ghost. This surprising development sets the stage for Tariq’s adventures in “Power Book II”, where he pursues his father’s path. However, Rainey is not bidding farewell to the character completely, as she clarified to PEOPLE:

Regardless of how it comes about – whether it’s a small snapshot in Origins or elsewhere – I am thrilled to introduce Tariq to you all on the screen. So, let’s find a way to make that happen. Our universe, much like the Power universe, is endless. We have Origins in the works, and more to come…

Over the course of its broadcast, “Power Book II: Ghost” presented an exceptional group of actors, headlined by R&B sensation Mary J. Blige, hip-hop legend Method Man, Michael Ealy, and Larenz Tate. Co-starring from the original series was Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, who also served as a producer alongside “Power” creator Courtney A. Kemp. This show ran for six seasons on Starz TV network between 2014 and 2020. The franchise is ongoing with spin-offs like the upcoming series “Origin“, which centers around younger iterations of Ghost and Tommy.

The fourth season of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” is scheduled for release this coming winter, following a shocking cliffhanger that left viewers eagerly anticipating more. The series, which stars Mekai Curtis, delves into the backstory of 50 Cent’s “Power” character and was recently renewed for a fifth season in March. STARZ has announced that “Power Book IV: Force” will wrap up with its third season, but a release date remains undetermined. Contrarily, “Power Book V: Influence,” which was set to feature Larenz Tate as Councilman Tate navigating the political landscape and his relentless rise to power, has unfortunately been canceled.

In the ever-expanding “Power” universe, its timelines might one day intertwine, reuniting beloved characters from earlier and current series. The original “Power” series, along with the finale of “Power Book II: Ghost,” is now airing on STARZ. Additionally, seasons 1-3 of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” and the initial two seasons of “Power Book IV: Force” can be found on this streaming platform.
