‘Practical Magic’ Producer Says Sequel Will “Honor” Original Film

As a dedicated fan who has grown up with the enchanting world of Practical Magic, I can’t help but feel the magic coursing through my veins upon hearing the news of its upcoming sequel. Having watched the original countless times, its themes of sisterhood, family, and acceptance have not only entertained me but also served as a comforting reminder that there’s indeed magic in everyday life.

The forthcoming Practical Magic sequel will keep the spirit of the original.

As a gamer, I’m super pumped about the upcoming sequel to my favorite game from 1998! In a chat with People magazine, the producer Denise Di Novi (who was part of the original project) hinted that they’re going to pay tribute to the original version. Can’t wait to see how they do it!

Di Novi expressed that a common error in creating sequels occurs when filmmakers strive too hard to be completely unique, aiming to innovate so drastically that the storyline becomes unexpectedly different.

The team responsible for the new film understands the significance of the initial movie, especially to a large number of female fans, and they are committed to paying tribute to it without a doubt.

“The movie is filled with a sense of joy and it explores profound themes like sisterhood, family, acceptance, tolerance, and love,” Di Novi explained. “Alice Hoffman, an extraordinary author, came up with the title for this film, ‘Practical Magic’, which has now entered common usage. The idea behind it is that there’s magic in everyday life, in relationships, in families, and in sisterhood. It’s a magical concept, and each of us possesses unique talents. We aim to celebrate these special qualities, especially those that women possess.”

In June, it was revealed that Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman would reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel. Akiva Goldsman, who contributed to the initial script, is set to write the new screenplay. Both actresses, along with Di Novi, are anticipated to produce the film as well.

The specifics of the plot are still unknown, but Di Novi had earlier mentioned to Entertainment Weekly that the sequel will be based on Hoffman’s 2021 book “The Book of Magic,” which is the fourth novel in the “Practical Magic” series.

In the 1998 movie titled “Practical Magic,” Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock portrayed two sisters who were orphaned and belonged to a family lineage of witches. Raised by their aunts in Massachusetts, they grappled with a spell that prevented them from experiencing lasting love.

“Di Novi expressed that the reaction to the sequel announcement on TikTok was overwhelming, and it’s clear it’s not slowing down. It was heartwarming to witness the joy of fans after Warner Brothers made the film official.”

Di Novi extolled Kidman and Bullock for delivering “extraordinary performances” in the last quarter-century following their collaboration on the movie. “Their professional journeys have been nothing short of spectacular, and it’s a joy to see them reunited once more,” she expressed.
