Prada and Axiom Space Unveil Spacesuit for Next NASA Moon Landing

As a gamer who has spent countless hours exploring virtual universes and dreaming of venturing into the real one, this Prada-Axiom Space collaboration for NASA’s Artemis III mission has me absolutely thrilled! Growing up playing games like “Moonbase Alpha” and “Space Station Silicon Valley,” I always imagined what it would be like to suit up and walk on the moon. Now, with the unveiling of the AxEMU spacesuit, that dream feels a bit closer to reality.

Prada and Axiom Space have unveiled the jointly created spacesuit, named AxEMU (Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit), designed for NASA’s Artemis III mission. This suit will enable astronauts to walk on the moon’s surface for the first time since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. The partners presented this innovative design at the International Astronautical Congress held today in Milan, Italy. The collaboration between these two entities began in 2022, leveraging Prada’s knowledge in materials and clothing with Axiom Space’s space technology expertise to create this suit for lunar exploration.

Axiom Space collaborated closely with Prada’s design and innovation team on specialized materials and features tailored for harsh lunar environments. For instance, the suit is designed to keep temperatures comfortable in scorching heat while also enduring the coldest temperatures at the lunar south pole and shadowed areas for a minimum of two hours.

In designing the AxEMU suit, prioritizing enhanced performance and safety is crucial. The suit incorporates several key features such as redundancy systems, in-suit diagnostics, regenerable carbon dioxide filtration systems, air-cooling capabilities, and a helmet with a vision-enhancing finish to ensure maximum protection. For ease of movement and functionality, the suit also comes equipped with advanced custom gloves. Lastly, Prada’s innovative fabrications and construction methods provide an aesthetically pleasing exterior, featuring a sleek white body with gray panels and red accents.

As I eagerly await NASA’s Artemis III mission, scheduled for no sooner than 2026, I’ll be joining forces with my colleagues in testing this suit under a range of extreme conditions, refining its design along the way. Until that day arrives, it’s fascinating to ponder how future space technology innovations will reshape the fashion landscape and foster collaboration among global visionaries.
