Predator Franchise Director Says It’s ‘Crazy’ This Horror Legend Never Made a Predator Film (& He’s Completely Right)

The franchise encompasses five movies from the initial saga, along with two interconnected spin-offs featuring the ‘Alien’ universe, and two more installments are forthcoming. Since its 1987 launch, this science fiction horror film series has been directed by a number of renowned filmmakers.

The carpenter is renowned for timeless movies such as “Halloween” from 1978, “The Thing” in 1982, and “Christine” in 1983. His directorial achievements made him an ideal choice for the franchise, but it never came to pass. Nevertheless, Trachtenberg believes that Carpenter should have been involved with the franchise.

The filmmaker expressed, “It’s amazing to think that John Carpenter never made one of those movies.” Later, he added, “Given the circumstances, I can’t help but wonder, ‘How fantastic would it have been if he had?’

Trachtenberg acknowledged that “AI can give an idea of how it might appear,” but conceded it wouldn’t be identical. He summarized, “Perhaps it’s just a coincidence.

As a gamer, I’d say both Predator and the original films share a chilling premise: a menacing, extraterrestrial danger looming over humanity. Both movies were masterfully crafted to keep me on the edge of my seat with nail-biting tension and spine-tingling horror moments. Though they have distinct differences in terms of stakes, plot, and the type of threat, having a filmmaker who’s already tackled the terrors of The Thing would’ve been an electrifying boost to the Predator franchise.

Dan Trachtenberg Continues His Predator Journey

In 2022, I hopped aboard the Predator universe with the film “Prey.” This gripping sci-fi action movie made its debut as an original on Hulu, focusing on a resilient young Comanche woman who not only sought to establish herself as a skilled hunter but also to protect her tribe from an early version of the Predator. The response was overwhelmingly favorable, with 94% approval from critics and 74% satisfaction from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. This encouraging reception has propelled me forward in my journey within the Predator franchise.

The Predator franchise is set to release a new sci-fi action film titled “Prey,” which was announced in February 2024. In this installment, Elle Fanning will take on the leading role as Thia, an android created by Weyland-Yutani. Prior to the release of “Predator: Badlands” in theaters, director Dan Trachtenberg worked on a clandestine project, which he revealed in April 2025 – the “Prey” project.

Predator: Killer of Killers will premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on June 6.
