This science fiction movie franchise, which made its debut in 1987, is renowned as one of the most admired and widely watched series of all sci-fi films. Comprising five main movies, two interconnected spin-offs, and a fresh addition that introduces several firsts to the franchise, it continues to captivate audiences.
The movie titled “Predator: Killer of Killers” marks the initial foray into animation within the Predator film series. This production, helmed by Dan Trachtenberg, who previously directed “Prey” in 2022, premiered on Disney+ on June 6. Notably, it made a striking debut, earning a flawless score of 100% – the highest opening rating within the franchise.
To begin with, the opening rating was a flawless 100%, derived from 12 initial reviews for Predator: Killer of Killers. As more opinions poured in, the score experienced minor fluctuations. At this point, it stands at an almost perfect 97% from critics out of 32 reviews, which remains exceptionally high. Given that the series has only recently been released, there are currently no ratings from the audience available.
To this point, the top-ranked movie within the franchise is the 1987 original, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers. As of now, Predator boasts a 80% approval rating among critics and an impressive 87% endorsement from viewers.
2010 found me revisiting the Predator universe with ‘Predators’, which, while not perfect, managed to eke out a passable 65% from the critics and a somewhat disheartening 52% from the audience. The 2018 offering, ‘The Predator’, unfortunately, takes the cake for lowest scores, with both critics and viewers unanimously expressing their dissatisfaction, giving it 34% and 32%, respectively. Even the 1990 sequel didn’t fare much better, with a mere 29% approval from the critics, but a slightly more optimistic 44% from the audience. Despite these low scores, I must admit that each installment has its own charm and contributes to the overall legacy of this intriguing franchise.
The two movies that combine the Alien and Predator franchises didn’t perform any better critically or among audiences. In particular, the first one, released in 2004 (Alien vs. Predator), received only a 21% approval rating from critics and 39% from the audience. The second movie, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem from 2007, fared even worse with just a 12% rating from critics and 30% from viewers, setting a low mark for the franchise.
What Are Critics Saying About Predator: Killer of Killers?
Jeremy Mathai contends that if Trachtenberg was trying out for a major role in the Predator series with Prey, then Killer of Killers definitively demonstrates why he’s the right choice for the job. He also expresses that the future of Predator has never seemed more promising. On the other hand, Frank Scheck praises the new animated film, Predator: Killer of Killers, stating it delivers the uninterrupted action diehard fans desire. Moreover, he emphasizes that the animated format hasn’t diluted its impact; instead, the film effortlessly justifies its R rating.
According to Nicholas Brooks, the film ‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ perfectly grasps the essential elements of a Predator narrative and does not disappoint. It offers intense action alongside broad explorations of various global and extraterrestrial cultures.
The only unfavorable feedback is from Eric Marche, who stated, “About two-thirds of the action-packed animated anthology film graphically depicts intense violence, but unfortunately, it falls into a complex and overwhelming narrative entanglement.”
The key changes are using “unfavorable” instead of “negative”, replacing “ensnared in its expansive trap” with “falls into a complex and overwhelming narrative entanglement”, and making the sentence more natural by rephrasing it slightly.
In this grown-up animated science fiction movie, Trachtenberg works alongside Joshua Wassung as co-directors. Micho Robert Rutare is responsible for writing the script. The title “Predator: Hunter of Hunters” represents the sixth installment in the series and the eighth production overall.
This narrative explores three historical figures who were fierce warriors: a Viking woman embarking on a brutal quest for vengeance alongside her son, a ninja in feudal Japan, and a World War II aviator. Although they can be labeled as killers, their lives take an unexpected turn when they encounter Predators. Joining the voice cast is Michael Biehn, renowned from the film “Alien.
After the successful premiere of “Predator: Killer of Killer“, director Dan Trachtenberg is now set to take on his third Predator project. The movie, titled “Predator: Badlands“, features actress Elle Fanning as Thia, an android developed by megacorporation Weyland-Yutani, a well-known organization. In the film, Thia teams up with a rejected Predator named Dek, from the desolate landscapes of “Badlands“. This will be Trachtenberg’s first theatrical release within the Predator franchise and is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 7.
Predator: Killer of Killers is streaming on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.
