President Trump Extends TikTok Deadline for a Second Time

ByteDance, owner of TikTok, has been granted an extension on the U.S. ban deadline by President Trump for the second time, buying them more time to find a solution.

Trump’s post on Truth Social stated, “My administration has been diligently working on a deal to preserve TikTok, making significant strides so far. The agreement needs further work to secure all necessary approvals, which is why I am issuing an executive order to keep the app operational for an additional 75 days. This extension gives ByteDance, the China-based company behind TikTok, more time to find a suitable American business to take over operations. The new deadline now falls in mid-June. Trump also mentioned, “We aim to continue our collaborative efforts with China, who I believe are not pleased about our reciprocal tariffs (essential for fair and balanced trade between China and the U.S.A.!),” aligning with recent tariff announcements in the United States.

According to CNBC’s reports, ByteDance has been actively discussing with the U.S. administration. A representative from ByteDance stated, “No agreement has been finalized yet. There are crucial issues that need resolution.” Originally, ByteDance had until January 19th to sell TikTok, but Trump signed an executive order the following day, extending the deadline by additional 75 days for negotiation. Before the law took effect, both Google and Apple removed the app from their respective app stores in anticipation of a temporary shutdown. However, the app was restored online shortly after Trump signed the executive order, thus prolonging the initial deadline.

The Chinese authorities must give their approval for the agreement to be finalized. On his Truth Social platform, Trump also penned, “This underscores that tariffs are a formidable economic weapon, crucial for our national security! We want TikTok to stay operational. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with TikTok and China to seal the deal. Thank you for your interest in this issue!
