‘Pretty Little Liars’ at 15: Cast and Creator Spill Secrets — From “A” to Most Talked-About Couples — and Share Hopes for a Reunion Movie

15 years back, a mysterious text was sent to four close companions, saying, “I’m still around, and I know it all – A.

In the summer of 2010, the small-town drama series Pretty Little Liars, adapted from Sara Shepard’s book series and broadcast on Freeform, created quite a buzz on social media and continues to be a popular topic in pop culture. This show, centered around the four girls known as the Pretty Little Liars – Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale), Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario), Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) and Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell) – reunited following a year-long separation triggered by the mysterious disappearance of their friend, Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse).

For seven seasons, the female characters work tirelessly to uncover the truth behind Alison’s disappearance, which they believe ended in her death. However, it is revealed in season four that she was alive all along, and another individual occupied her grave. Along this journey, three significant “A” identities are exposed. Additionally, numerous secrets come to light, characters meet their untimely ends, relationships bloom and crumble, and the characters navigate issues such as substance abuse, eating disorders, and beauty expectations, just to name a few recurring themes.

Week after week, through countless twists and turns that captivated audiences each Tuesday evening, the essence of the series revolved around genuine female camaraderie and the unwavering bond it forges, regardless of circumstances.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of “Pretty Little Liars”, creator Marlene King and main actors Troian Bellisario, Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell, Sasha Pieterse, Ian Harding (portraying Ezra Fitz), Tyler Blackburn (as Caleb Rivers) and Keegan Allen (Toby Cavanaugh) shared their thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter. They discussed the series’ most debated storylines, answered fan queries, reminisced on both cherished and contentious relationships, and even touched upon spin-offs, a possible reunion, and the enduring impact that the show has had since it concluded in June 2017.

Breaking Down “A”

The primary mystery that ran through the series was figuring out the identity of “A”. At the end of season two, many viewers speculated that “A” might be Hanna’s friend Mona, portrayed by Janel Parrish (as suggested in the books). However, in season five, it turned out to be Alison’s transgender adopted sister and biological cousin Charlotte DiLaurentis (known as “CeCe Drake”, played by Vanessa Ray). Finally, at the end of season seven, viewers learned the true identity of “A.D.” – it was Spencer’s British twin sister Alex Drake. The actor who portrayed both sisters, Bellisario, had been aware of the final reveal for approximately three years before the finale aired.

TROIAN BELLISARIO (Playing Spencer Hastings/Alex Drake) I am truly thankful that Spencer wasn’t ‘A.’ It would have been utterly confusing, to say the least. Though some might argue Alex was a leap too far for many viewers, having her as ‘A’ and subjecting herself to seven years of self-torment would have made for a rather harsh conclusion. I consider myself quite lucky when, during filming in our fourth year, Marlene was in a generous mood and, upon asking the right question, she confided in me her plans for Alex. However, if this information were to leak in any way, it would not have been possible. Therefore, I had to maintain strict secrecy and not share the news with anyone – not even my fellow cast members. Not until the table read.

Everyone seemed extremely anxious about the secret being leaked. In retrospect, perhaps we could have given our audience more credit and shared the information earlier. What I’m suggesting is that we had only two instances where Alex appeared with the main cast before the final episode. I wished for more interactions as it would have made the climax more rewarding for the viewers to reflect on and say, “Wow! That was her, and there was Spencer, and that was her too.” However, I also recognize that the finale had a lot of crucial events to unfold.

Marlene King explains the decision to make the final “A” someone outside the original characters.

MARLENE KING (CREATOR, WRITER, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) All of them were equally tormented by “A.” Many fans often hoped that one of the Liars would be “A,” but it wouldn’t have made sense for a character to inflict such pain upon themselves. Therefore, I came up with the closest plausible solution, balancing fan expectations while staying true to the characters. The enjoyable aspect of producing the show was constantly twisting and turning the storylines as far as possible. That might have been the origin of Alex.

Although there were indications that “A” could be Aria (Hale), such as Mona referring to her as “Big A”, the Liars believing she kept secrets best among them and her signing her name as “-A” in the Halloween episode of season three, it was never intended by King for her to actually be “A.

LUCY HALE (AS “ARIA MONTGOMERY”) Without a doubt, I believed Aria would turn out to be “A”. The producers, writers, and Marlene were excellent at keeping the storylines and scripts confidential. Often, we’d only receive the scripts a day before shooting, which added an element of mystery to our real lives too. In my thoughts, I constantly wondered, “Could it possibly be Aria in the end?” I think all of us hoped for that twist for our characters.

The King She wasn’t the one, and she never would be. It was always a final stop that wasn’t among our four suspects, but we made it an enjoyable ride. We threw in plenty of false leads to keep viewers guessing, and Aria was one of those we considered deeply. We certainly tried to persuade people that Aria was the culprit, and when she turned out not to be, those who believed she was got frustrated – they just wanted to be correct. I have so many photos of fans sending me their walls adorned with murder boards asking, “Who is A?” It was a blast keeping everyone guessing.

BELLISARIO Going against the essence of the series, it wouldn’t have been one of the Liars. The heart of this show lies with its four main characters and their relationships, particularly with Ali. It simply wouldn’t have fit, so I’m relieved they chose not to explore that path.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve always been longing for the chance to embody “A” in the series. Each season found me knocking on the writers’ door, eagerly asking if my dream could possibly come true. The pivotal moment came in season seven, episode nine, “The Wrath of Kahn”, where I was secretly observing Noel Kahn while wearing a blue hat. The writers casually said, “Consider this your ‘A’, this is your undercover mission.” My castmates were quick to dismiss it, saying “You’re not ‘A’, there’s no way.” But I would simply shrug and say, “Alright, I’ll take these storylines then,” chuckling to myself. Deep down, I yearned for the role of “A” so strongly.

King discusses the reactions to the finale.

The King The ending is a mix of opinions. At times, I’ve come across reviews calling it a disastrous finale, while other times, people have praised it as satisfying. For me, as a storyteller, the conclusion was more about saying farewell than revealing who “A” truly was. What mattered most was that final scene where the girls are together, bidding goodbye. Filming and writing that particular part were incredibly challenging.

Reflecting on Ezria and Those Age Gaps

“Maybe he fools around with students all of the time. A lot of teachers do. Just ask your dad. -A”

Among the many popular pairs on the show, the intriguing dynamic was between Aria and Ezra (Harding), often referred to as Ezria. Their encounter took place at a bar just before Aria started her junior year of high school, and their relationship had its share of triumphs and challenges throughout the series. In the final episode, they chose to get married.

In another era, one might wonder if the plot of that series would still resonate. Given the circumstances at the time, I was only excited to be part of a TV show as Aria, aged 19. Now, with maturity, I ponder the deeper meanings behind each role I take on. Regardless, I hold no regrets about their portrayed love story. That captivating tale of forbidden love remains a lasting impression.

IAN HARDING (AS EZRA FITZ) Our aim was consistently to convey a significant bond between them. I hope it was convincing enough to excuse the questionable relationship that wasn’t ideal at the time, considering its problematic nature. As society has evolved, we came to understand how inappropriate it may have appeared. However, I am content with the outcome because it somehow makes it less uncomfortable, although it’s never easy to admit due to my fondness for these characters. I adore Ezra and as an actor, one must always defend this character, regardless of their flaws. They both found contentment, and fortunately, the relationship caused minimal harm or distress. Despite the turmoil and horrors portrayed throughout the show, surprisingly, their relationship served as a sanctuary amidst the chaos.

15 years ago, the topic of grooming wasn’t something we typically discussed. However, if we were to revisit this fictional world, it would be essential to address this issue. This could potentially become a significant plot point. Despite their controversial past, they were widely beloved as a couple. Some may disagree, but their popularity was undeniable. They had a deep affection for each other, even though he knew her true identity before she did. We always aimed to ensure that their relationship had consequences and wasn’t without challenges. It wasn’t an easy relationship, but they deserved a happy ending because of their enduring popularity among the audience.

PARAPHRASED The topic was intentionally off-limits. We were indulging in this make-believe scenario. During my high school years, I had teacher fantasies, but simply because something is portrayed on television doesn’t mean it’s endorsed. It was a dramatic series meant for amusement, and the show was a thriller. In retrospect, I can see that it mirrored the program with its unexpected twists, horror aspects, and romantic elements. Consequently, I don’t harbor deep regrets because it was fiction. However, I also acknowledge that it sparked some challenging conversations about what constitutes abuse versus love.

BELLISARIO In the initial season, my spouse, Patrick (portrayed by J. Adams as Hardy), was among the few characters who were friends with Ezra Fitz and warned, “It’s inappropriate to be with a high school student. This is not acceptable.”

or

BELLISARIO During the first season, my husband, Patrick (as Hardy), was one of only a few friends of Ezra Fitz on the show and advised, “It’s wrong to be with a high schooler. That’s not acceptable.

KING Initially, we might have stepped over a boundary that I wouldn’t do now, but I don’t wish to undermine their storyline either. Many fans found it incredibly gratifying. On the night that episode featuring Lucy kissing Jason (played by Drew Van Acker) was broadcast, we were both on set. The backlash we received on social media was intense. It was astonishing. I remember thinking, “I need a security guard to escort me home tonight.” The level of fanaticism surrounding Aria and Ezra’s relationship was extraordinary.

MARLENE_PARAPHRASING Marlene and the team skillfully gave Lucy a great deal of control over their relationship in the storyline. I rarely felt like my character started interactions with her; it seemed more like she was guiding our connection. Many of our scenes resembled everyday domestic life, discussing school matters while I cooked or journaling together. Troian, who noticed this years ago, commented: “Despite being a teen heartthrob, your character is arguably the least sexual in history.” Wearing sweaters vests doesn’t exactly stimulate passion. (Laughs.) The writers and creators deliberately downplayed the romantic aspect and emphasized Lucy’s autonomy. My character never tried to exploit his power or position.

SASHA PIETERSE, KNOWN AS ALI ON THE SHOW, had a chance encounter with Ezra at a college bar. It might seem strange that he didn’t suspect she was underage, but truth be told, it was more Aria’s fault than his. This storyline became a favorite among viewers, earning universal acclaim. Recently, I encountered an extraordinary fan experience. A girl informed me that she had started dating her teacher due to the show. She said, “I even started dating my teacher,” and my reaction was, “Oh, dear!

PARAPHRASING I’m not ashamed or apologetic about portraying this role. While there were aspects of the character that might have been questionable, remember he’s a work of fiction overall.

It’s worth mentioning that Spencer attracted the interest of men older than herself, such as Ian (Ryan Merriman), who was once dating her sister Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) before they got married, and Wren (Julian Morris), who was previously engaged to Melissa.

BELLISARIO Most of the relationships portrayed in the books were common back then, as society had different norms regarding age gaps between high school girls and older males. Even a decade or so ago, this was prevalent in literature, television, and film. So, I believe our portrayal mirrored those societal standards. Additionally, since I was in my twenties while playing a high school character, people found it acceptable because they were around the same age. Although they might have been a year or two older than me, they too were in their twenties. Nowadays, I frequently ponder how things would have been different had I encountered men in their twenties then. The show’s use of women who were already in their 20s or on the verge of turning 20, like Ashley, and pairing them with men also in their 20s, seemed more visually appropriate.

PIETERSE In the first season, I couldn’t help but think, “What was his fixation with her? They barely knew each other, just two meetings!” Yet, he was ready to sacrifice everything for that halter top, which completely altered their relationship. If you revisit that episode, it will become clear what I’m referring to.

In my fangirl excitement, I’d like to share a fascinating tidbit about the character, Alison Pieterse. Just like her on-screen counterparts, the same event unfolded for her, but here’s where it gets intriguing – she was merely 12 years old when they filmed the pilot! That makes her the youngest among the Liars, adding an extra layer of awe to her performances.

PIETERSE I completed my education at an early age of 14, as I was homeschooled. My involvement in the industry dates back to when I was just 5 years old. I’ve always found more ease in the company of adults rather than peers, so it never seemed unusual to me at the time. However, reflecting upon it now, as a mother, I’m more mindful of the situation. When I revisit those scenes, I ponder, “How did I feel during filming?” I always felt secure, but it’s peculiar that we engage in such activities given that the storylines portray minors. Although I find comfort in these situations, it’s hard to grasp fully. There have been a few instances over the years while shooting where I felt uneasy, but the crew intervened promptly and were always vigilant, which is crucial. The entertainment industry has repeatedly shown that not everyone receives such protection, and unfortunate incidents can occur. Many teenage girls experience discomfort in some way or another, which is regrettable. The expectations placed upon them and the attention they receive, whether warranted or not, are challenges we all face to varying degrees. So, it’s not surprising; I was simply enacting these experiences on screen.

Emison: The Storyline They’re Most Proud Of

During the initial run of the show, one of the primary characters, Emily (Mitchell), revealed she is gay. In the year 2010, there was a scarcity of LGBTQ+ representation on screen, making her storyline and subsequent romantic involvement with Alison pioneering for diverse narratives in television and cinema.

In its first season, one of the main characters, Emily (Mitchell), openly identified as gay. In 2010, there was a dearth of LGBTQ+ portrayals on screen, so her storyline and romantic relationship with Alison set a precedent for more inclusive narratives in TV and film production.

SHAY MITCHELL (“EMILY FIELDS”) Emily truly paved the way, particularly during that era and on that specific network. It carried great significance. That storyline is incredibly significant. I wish it had been more prevalent, but her character sparked conversations for countless individuals, and still does. I cherish observing people rewatching the series. I haven’t viewed any episodes since we ceased production, but there will be a time when I will introduce the show to my daughters, starting from season one. And that will be quite interesting. The fanbase surrounding Emily’s character, I can only feel immense pride. I own an “Emison” t-shirt. I wore it to a Pride event half a year ago and it was well-received.

I’m incredibly pleased with the storylines involving Emily-Alison and Emily’s coming out. There have been numerous messages expressing gratitude from viewers who either watched it with their parents or found the courage to come out to their loved ones thanks to it. For me, it was crucial that when she revealed her truth to her friends, they continued to love her without reservation, serving as an inspiration for others’ friends to stand by their loved ones during such significant moments in their lives.

PIETERSE It’s a great privilege, not something to be taken lightly. During filming, Shay and I were acutely conscious of this responsibility, and we’re genuinely proud of our work on it. Emison means a lot to me, and I’m pleased with how we portrayed it in the series because we were among the first to tackle such themes; it was crucial that we handled it delicately. Emily found it difficult to tell her parents about this, which was a significant plot point, and the fact that one parent was initially unsupportive added depth to the storyline. It would have been an error to make everything seem okay, just as it would have been to make everything dark. I’m glad we showed the complexity of such situations and how every family is unique, with people sometimes changing their minds, struggling, but also experiencing joy from those changes.

As a gamer speaking about my on-screen character, I always felt it was essential to depict a strong family values message, especially since I’m portrayed as a married man. This means showing pride in who we are and who we love on the show, setting an example for our fictional kids. Emily, my on-screen wife, was not just a Pretty Little Liar but also had a sporty side that resonated with me. She was stylish, and her homecoming look was nothing short of stunning. Shay, the actress who played Emily, is truly a beautiful soul, both inside and out. Her character evolved over time, reflecting more of Shay’s personality as the show progressed. They all had creative control over their wardrobe choices, even selecting their Halloween costumes. We’ve been together for seven seasons, and it’s crucial to keep our audience engaged and happy during that journey.

PIETERSE Currently, I’m re-watching Pretty Little Liars for my podcast, and it’s quite an experience. We’re on episode five now. This is the first time I’ve revisited this series, and it feels strange – not just regarding Emily and Alison, but overall, the way we communicate in the show. Some dialogues make me squirm, while others I’ve forgotten, only to be reminded later with a thought like, “Wow, that line was brilliantly delivered!” If given the chance to redo certain scenes, there would be a few things that Alison says to Emily that, as an adult with more insight, I might handle differently. There are moments that have saddened me, but at the time, they were considered normal in our society, so nothing’s ever flawless. I believe the creators did an excellent job, and it’s something I will always be proud to champion.

In recollection, there was a pivotal instance during the second or third series where we discovered an advertiser had pulled out. An activist group demanded funds be withdrawn from our production due to a relationship they deemed “unacceptable and vile,” as their statement read. Upon hearing this, I thought to myself, “I suppose Lucy and I aren’t exactly the ideal pairing.” It was later revealed that it was actually Shay’s character who was involved in the controversial relationship. We were frequently criticized for portraying a distasteful lifestyle, but in truth, we were simply showing two women of similar age learning to love each other. Reflecting on it now, I can see that my own relationship might have been the most problematic. Conversely, the one I was most proud of was often Shay’s story.

Following their wedding in the final episode of the original series, Emily and Alison call it quits in the subsequent show, “Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists”. This decision left many viewers taken aback.

KING To be honest, Sasha and Janel Parrish were keen on the spinoff, but Shay had different ideas. If we had continued for five seasons of the show, Alison wouldn’t have been single. However, it appeared to be the most effective way to develop her character fully by giving her a divorce.

PIETERSE I care about our fans so much, and I understood how many people that storyline touched globally and how many people were brought together because of that storyline. I love our writers and everybody involved, and I know it’s hard to keep people interested and give them excitement, especially when it comes to a spinoff. So this is not a direct insult to anybody, but I feel like it was a bit of a slap in the face to fans who have been there and supported that relationship for so long and how much that meant to people. It still does make me sad, and it’s important to acknowledge it because I think what can happen with relationships on television like this is that it can be a token or clickbait, or a box to check and that was never what Emison was supposed to be. It’s never what that relationship was meant to be. It’s important to acknowledge that was a mistake.

JAMES I must admit, I was completely unaware [they had separated]. I haven’t been paying attention to that situation, nor have I kept myself informed about it. It was a surprise to me; I didn’t realize they had parted ways, so this is fresh news for me.

The Love Triangle: Spaleb

In the main storyline, season six introduced the romantic pairing of Spencer and Caleb, often referred to as “Spaleb.” This was a significant shift for the characters since Hanna (Benson) and Caleb (“Haleb”) had been together throughout most of the series, eventually getting married. To add to this, Hanna and Spencer are close friends. Therefore, when Spencer and Caleb started dating at one point, it drew criticism from viewers due to their history with Hanna.

TYLER BLACKBURN (“CALEB RIVERS”) I had great admiration for Troian as an actress and found the concept intriguing, yet it seemed somewhat puzzling at times – like, “What on earth are you all up to?” And indeed, the audience shared similar sentiments. Shooting with Troian was enjoyable though, as we had a unique chemistry. Her character held her own against mine, not that Hanna wasn’t intelligent in her own right – she was quite the smart aleck, after all! (Chuckles.) The exciting aspect was portraying Caleb and Spencer as equally intellectual characters. By this point in the show, a five-year time jump had occurred, making us older actors. A scene where I approached Spencer’s house, unaware that Hanna was inside, added to the tension. However, our dynamic didn’t last long, but it sure was entertaining!

ALICE I was absolutely fuming. So angry. It wasn’t a crazy rage, but I was just heartbroken. I had been eagerly anticipating Hanna and Caleb reuniting, and it simply wasn’t materializing. It was peculiar too, given that Spencer was dating Hanna’s former best friend and eventual love interest. I found myself deeply invested in the plotline. However, there were some truly poignant and emotionally raw moments among all three of them while they were together on the show that I appreciated. It wasn’t my favorite storyline, but I adore Troian and Tyler, so I thought it was endearing that they got their own narrative. But as a die-hard Haleb fan, it was challenging.

BLACKBURN (PARAPHRASED) Hanna had a chance to take charge, yet she didn’t. So, Caleb felt discouraged and said, “I guess that’s it then.” Later on, he chose to leave the situation, eventually connecting with Spencer. There was likely some friction between them. However, in the end, they both wished for each other’s happiness, or Hanna specifically wanted Spencer to be content. Life can often be confusing and messy, but it’s crucial to express yourself openly and honestly.

BENSON The tears were genuine, a shared emotion among the three of us since we were more than just colleagues – we felt like a family, deeply connected and affectionate towards each other. I distinctly recall that particular moment [at the house]. I didn’t need to exert any effort to get into the right mindset, as I was moved by their performances even through the door, with a camera capturing my reaction simultaneously. They had one for Troian and another for Tyler; it was an authentic and intense scene. That remains one of my most cherished scenes to have filmed. I’ve rewatched it countless times due to the touching fan edits shared on social media platforms. It’s truly heart-rending.

BELLISARIO To the writers, I expressed, “These female characters are experiencing numerous relationships, but this group also includes males. I understand that sometimes there’s a reconnection between men and women, such as, ‘We’ve been friends since high school, and now it’s college; your best friend isn’t with you anymore, and there’s an attraction between us.’ This is quite natural.” When they penned it and we began filming, the response from fans was intense. They reacted, “No, it’s terrible that Spencer and Caleb were together for a while.” However, I felt this is what people often do. And of course, it doesn’t change the fact that Hanna and Caleb end up together, which is wonderful and beautiful, but it’s also heartwarming that Spencer and Hanna go through a period of personal growth where they explore feelings for others. When Hanna tells her, ‘You can go and investigate that,’ it’s a profoundly mature moment. I really appreciated it, though I know it wasn’t popular among fans.

The monarch There was a rule I’d established, that no one could date another person without seeking permission first. The series is essentially about the deep-rooted friendship among these four, later five girls. Therefore, when Hanna gave her blessing for Spencer to date someone else, it marked the beginning of an intriguing and intense romantic storyline. Ashley and I still reminisce about the scene where Caleb professed his love to Spencer outside Hanna’s door, a moment that remains one of my favorites in the show, pulling at heartstrings. To this day, I consider it among the best scenes in the series.

Spoby: The Unexpected Lovers

Initially, Spaleb wasn’t Spencer’s ultimate romantic partner. Instead, it was Spoby (Spencer and Toby) that held a special place for her. The duo started dating towards the end of season one after finding common ground as outcasts in Rosewood due to rumors linking them to Ali’s murder when everyone still believed she was deceased.

BELLISARIO The bond between them was exceptional due to its deviation from the script. Typically, Toby passes away early in the novels, but having the talented actor Keegan Allen on board made the experience even more enjoyable. We had a great time collaborating. Initially, the writers wondered if they should explore the dynamic between these two characters, and it ended up flourishing. I hold this relationship close to my heart because it was so unique to the series and distinct from other relationships. They complement each other wonderfully. To this day, I continue to admire Keegan deeply.

Just like every other couple on the series, Spoby encountered difficulties. The most significant hurdle came in season three when it was disclosed that Toby had been an accomplice of the “A-Team,” specifically helping Mona. After Spencer learns this and later discovers a corpse, which she believes to be Toby’s, she experiences a mental collapse and is hospitalized at Radley Sanitarium, a psychiatric facility.

In one of those instances, I found myself contemplating, “Ah, any hope for a typical relationship is lost now.” Witnessing Spencer’s breakdown and realizing that Toby was engaged in this intricate double-agent role was excruciating. Fans were undeniably enraged. And yet, from an acting perspective, I couldn’t get enough of it. That storyline offered us such rich emotional complexity to explore. Troian, as always, was exceptional. The tension was palpable, the pain was intense, and yet, it was impossible to look away. Any scenario involving Spencer Hastings being admitted to a psychiatric institution due to Toby Cavanaugh was the epitome of PLL madness. I miss those days, just like the fans do.

BELLISARIO A significant aspect of the series revolved around the theme: You’re being blackmailed, living in terrible situations, and needing to deceive continually while maintaining a semblance of normality, even showing up at school in stylish attire. However, it was refreshing when I began to encounter scripts that depicted Spencer struggling to continue with her charade. This narrative progression mirrored her struggles with drug addiction, betrayal by Toby, and ultimately, her time at Radley. I vividly recall feeling a sense of liberation while portraying what seemed like the genuine struggles she was facing.

Throughout the subsequent seasons, their relationship experiences ups and downs as they separate and then reconcile. However, by the final episode of the series, they are back together again.

Or more informally:

After some off-and-on drama in the later seasons, they end up back together by the time the series finale rolls around.

ALLEN Every Spoby fan, including myself, seemed to release a collective sigh of relief when they reunited, and for good reason. Considering all the challenges they faced – breakups, secrets, faked deaths, and the A-Team ordeal – their reunion felt like coming full circle. It wasn’t just about romance; it symbolized forgiveness, growth, and two individuals who always managed to find their way back to each other despite everything. In a town as complex as Rosewood, such enduring love is either a miracle or simply exceptional writing.

The Liars’ Complex Relationships, Ali’s Redemption and Why She Wasn’t Killed Off

Despite the fact that Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily were once close friends with Alison before she vanished, flashbacks suggest that Alison could sometimes be harsh towards her friends and manipulate them using their secrets. For instance, Spencer perceived Ali as competitive and discovered she was abusing amphetamines; Emily learned about her sexuality and felt led on romantically by Ali; Aria’s dad’s affair was known to Ali, who threatened to reveal it; and Hanna, who struggled with her weight, was ridiculed and advised to purge by Alison – ultimately leading to an eating disorder. The question arises: Why did the girls remain friends with someone who treated them so poorly? The cast members discuss why they believe their characters stayed loyal to Ali, given their past experiences, and how this relates to real-life situations, especially for young girls.

BELLISARIO The mix of anxiety and longing I felt back in high school was intense. While I can’t generalize about other generations, I can certainly share my personal experience. I had a close friend who could be incredibly cruel to me, yet it was an accepted part of our relationship because I yearned for her approval so deeply that I endured whatever she dished out. I never stood up for myself and said, “That’s not okay,” because I was determined to belong and find my place.

MITCHELL I believe she understood her heart was kind. She was aware that Alison had faced hardships, yet at her core, she was a good soul. Regardless of her fluctuations and moments when she might not have treated her optimally, she remained resolute: “I’ll stay by your side. I am the friend who stands with you through thick and thin, offering support.” [Emily] embodies unwavering loyalty.

BENSON Shooting those scenes brought back memories of the daily challenges people face, particularly the internal turmoil between eating or not eating, or enduring bullying. Marlene excelled on PLL by ensuring that each character had a problem that resonated with viewers of all ages, tackling tougher topics. Hanna’s journey, for instance, began with her being bullied and overweight, and she eventually lost weight not in the healthiest way. As she became more self-assured, Hanna transformed into a very confident woman. She experienced highs and lows, but she managed to assert herself and avoid slipping back into her eating disorder or negative mindset. Along with her struggles with alcohol, Hanna learned valuable lessons from these experiences. Ultimately, she emerged stronger, more independent, and with a greater understanding of who she is.

Hanna deeply desired Alison’s acceptance. From the very beginning, there seemed to be an aura of radiance surrounding Alison on the show, even during our younger years in flashbacks. Despite her being harsh, it was hard not to feel drawn to her. Hanna admired something about her that she yearned for – her style, her appearance, her beauty. Ultimately, Hanna aspired not only to gain Alison’s acceptance but also to emulate her.

Alison seized those perfect instances because when someone you look up to acknowledges you, it gives a wonderful sense of validation. This is a natural human response, yet it can also create vulnerability, allowing others to mistreat you in pursuit of that validation. When someone holds power over you like this, they can easily exploit the situation. At that age, the girls were so enamored by the lifestyle associated with her that they would do anything to maintain access to her, even hiding heinous secrets and tolerating harmful behavior. Some degree of this behavior is unfortunately common in all of us, though hopefully never to such an extreme. It’s disconcerting to see it romanticized as I revisit it, but it doesn’t seem unrealistic. Such situations occur frequently in real life.

BELLISARIO The four girls captured my heart because each one struggled with her own vulnerabilities: Spencer’s excessive competitiveness, Hanna’s initial concerns about her weight and appearance, Emily’s secretive sexuality, and Aria’s doubts about her identity and place in the world. It’s fascinating to see these four characters evolve into women, supporting each other through their insecurities, embracing one another despite their differences, and ultimately accepting themselves. It’s a truly moving tale.

During the performance, Pieterse faced health complications due to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), leading to weight changes. Additionally, she was subjected to cyberbullying. Although these challenges occurred away from the camera, Pieterse mentioned that it would have been beneficial to discuss them with her character, stating: “It would’ve been great to talk about it.

PIETERSE The situation seemed rather unspoken. No formal discussions or planning sessions involving me took place. Instead, things were done for me, it appears. Despite being a large family, there were only a few individuals who transitioned throughout the seven-year period. Consequently, we shared all experiences together. We spent more time with one another than with our individual families during the nine months of filming. We attended weddings, funerals, birthdays, and parties together. It’s challenging to navigate both media obligations and personal life in such a scenario. However, the crew was always there to support me, treating me like a sister or daughter. I always felt safeguarded by our team.

Initially, I participated in a radio discussion where the previous speaker was a mother whose daughter had taken her own life due to bullying at school. The bully was someone similar to Alison’s character from the show. The conversation was heavy because it highlighted real-life bullying, and then transitioned to discussing the glamorization of such behavior in shows like Pretty Little Liars featuring Sasha Pieterse as Alison. It was a stark contrast, making for an intriguing dialogue. Later, when I had personal health issues that were public, I encountered a different kind of challenge – online bullying on platforms like Instagram and Twitter. This experience mirrored my journey from being 12 to 19 years old while filming the show, as my real-life experiences closely paralleled the events portrayed in it. Overall, it was a rewarding and eye-opening experience, but it also presented its own set of difficulties.

The initial encounter between Ali and the Liars, following the rumor of her death, unfolded in the Halloween episode from season four, titled “Grave New World.” Recall the memorable spin around in a scarlet cloak as she asked: “Did you miss me?

That unforgettable night was filled with anticipation and energy. People who had already wrapped up for the day lingered just to catch a glimpse of it from behind the camera. It was an iconic scene, and I believe it was around 3 am when we captured it. It was the final shot of the day, and there was a palpable sense of excitement in the air because everyone knew this would leave them spellbound. I recall watching the playback on the camera as they slowed down the footage, and Troian exclaimed, “You have to see this, it’s so beautiful.” The shot with the barn in the backdrop was a perfect touch that added to its charm. We all sensed that we were witnessing a special moment.

During season five, when Ali joined school once more and re-entered Rosewood alongside the Liars, her notorious snobbish behavior that audiences loved to dislike started to undergo significant transformation. This change was largely due to the immense growth Ali experienced following a series of harrowing ordeals she had endured in recent years, such as being compelled to hide from Mona, living in hiding, being buried alive by her mother, and getting attacked by someone she thought she could trust.

As a gamer, I found myself hooked on unraveling Alison’s mystery. The night she disappeared was shrouded in intrigue and I eagerly followed the trail to piece together the puzzle. The plot unfolded in a way that made sense to me: it seemed like her strange behavior towards that person was a consequence of certain events. There were moments when I laughed, because no one could possibly experience all those events in a single night in reality. Yet, in this fantastical world, it was thrilling to imagine. The thought of nearly being killed by your own mother was terrifying, but the show provided an exhilarating energy that kept me engaged. It was a unique brand of excitement that left me eager for more.

According to King, the initial idea was to end Alison’s character in the final episode of season five [“I’m a Good Girl, I Am”], but instead, the season concluded with Ali being sent to prison following an incorrect conviction for Mona Vanderwaal’s murder. Interestingly, Mona wasn’t actually deceased.

In the series, we enjoyed creating dramatic twists and turns, such as turning characters into villains only to later redeem them. For instance, Paige (Lindsey Shaw) attempted to drown Emily, but we eventually made amends with her character. Similarly, Mona, the original “A,” was also given a chance at redemption. Originally, we contemplated killing [Alison] in the season five finale and having her return through flashbacks, but I can’t recall why we decided against it. Perhaps I discussed this idea with Sasha, suggesting she would continue on the show but only appear in flashbacks. However, we ultimately felt it was unfair to the fans and decided not to go that route. Instead, after the time jump, we planned for Ali’s funeral. As for who might have killed Alison, I’m unsure. We hadn’t gotten that far, but I suppose it could have been Alex Drake.

PARAPHRASING Marlene is such a delight. It was foreboding. We sensed that if you engaged in a discussion or if [King] summoned you, some significant change was brewing for your character. I was on set when she informed me I would survive. I didn’t receive the call that I was to perish because they altered their plans. However, I did learn about it later. I had a blast living. It would have been intriguing to delve into what might have transpired if I had died, perhaps examining the alternate character, or ‘the twin’. Regardless of the path they might have taken, that narrative twist would have been fascinating to investigate further.

KING One thing I regretted, even though it didn’t seem right at the time, was when we split up all the couples from season six A to B, during the time jump. I think everyone wanted a change, but looking back, I wish we had kept at least one couple together to maintain some continuity. Fans might have been frustrated that every relationship ended.

A Trip Back to Ravenswood

During the fourth Halloween special, titled “Grave New World”, Caleb Rivers departs Rosewood to assist a girl named Miranda Collins (played by Nicole Gale Anderson) in the enigmatic town of Ravenswood. This town served as a spin-off series featuring Blackburn, which debuted in 2013 but was unfortunately discontinued after only one season.

BLACKBURN The series was a spin-off from Pretty Little Liars, but it introduced supernatural elements that left viewers puzzled about its connection to the original show. However, with a different focus, it could have been an intriguing standalone story. The decision to make it a spin-off was likely due to the popularity of PLL and the involvement of the same creator. I’m fond of supernatural themes, and I believe it had the potential to explore fascinating concepts. Regrettably, we didn’t get to see its development.

After Ravenswood got canceled, Blackburn returned to PLL for season five.

BLACKBURN It was incredible that they welcomed me again! Upon his return, Caleb showed some more complex characteristics due to his experiences abroad. For a while, he struggled with alcohol addiction, which gave him an extra dimension when he came back. Before this, he had a bit of a rebellious streak, but this time it was a darker aspect. I also got a new haircut and found the experience enjoyable.

Although, there would’ve been more to explore.

In a previous narrative, we featured characters known as the original Caleb and Miranda who were romantically involved. Their ghostly counterparts were set to have an extraordinary ghost romance, but it remained unfulfilled. I believe one reason why “Ravenswood” didn’t resonate strongly with audiences was due to disappointment among the Hanna-Caleb fan base.

BLACKBURN Hanna and Caleb were both sharp-tongued and sarcastic, yet their affection for each other ran deep – a connection that clearly resonated with viewers. The relationship between Miranda was less romantic in nature; it seemed to me that Caleb felt drawn to her partly because they shared the commonality of being orphans. He felt compelled to aid this girl, and in doing so, developed strong feelings for her. However, I don’t believe his feelings for her were as profound as those he had for Hanna or Spencer.

However, Blackburn admits the chemistry with Benson wasn’t all acting.

BLACKBURN Many believe Ashley and I were romantically involved outside of the show, which was not the case. While we shared a few playful kisses and had a strong friendship, our relationship was purely platonic. There were rumors swirling that we were dating, but in reality, we never did date. We shared great chemistry both on and off set, but it remained strictly professional.

BENSON [In response to Blackburn’s comment] (Laughs.) No, we didn’t go out as a couple. However, we shared a unique bond. Our relationship extended beyond the screen, but no, we never dated. But yes, we were incredibly close.

Reunion

Ever since “Pretty Little Liars” first aired 15 long years ago and ended almost eight years back, I’ve been wondering: When might we get a reunion? The anticipation in any PLL fan’s heart is palpable!

The King We’ve often reminisced about our times together. The thought of potentially creating a movie or a series of 10 episodes set in Rosewood is intriguing. However, I’d need to cook up an engaging plot to lure everyone back and decide where we should take this story next. I believe the cast would be on board with it. We’ve been discussing recently that perhaps it’s time to revisit this idea. It’s been long enough that we could draw from new, lived experiences for these characters, making it a continuation yet distinctly different.

King also addresses whatever happened to the potential film mentioned years ago.

PARAPHRASING We needed it for business purposes. It was intended to connect seasons six A and B, paving the way for the time leap. However, things didn’t progress quickly enough in the planning phase, which was unfortunate since it would have been exciting. I think there might be a significant event that reunites them – most likely a funeral. And then there would have to be some sort of mystery or revelation, which I’ll call an “A.” In other words, the key events would be a funeral and an “A” scenario.

As a devoted fan, I’ve been pondering… It seems like a movie would be the ideal choice, given how I feel that another season might not quite cut it. Nonetheless, imagining what’s become of these cherished characters is incredibly enticing. We’ve shared their journeys for seven years, and now it’s been seven years since they’ve graced our screens. So, it feels like the perfect moment to catch up on where they stand today.

BLACKBURN I’d be thrilled to work on a movie! I often pondered that the series would be even more kick-ass if it wasn’t bound by family network rules. If it were a PG-13 film, we could amp up the intensity, add some grisly or grotesque scenes, and perhaps inject a touch of sensuality as well.

BENSON Maybe Hanna could finally be “A!” I’ll do it if she can be “A.” (Laughs.)

MITCHELL I’ve often mentioned to Marlene and the others that in the future, we might reunite for a fun activity, similar to what the Sex and the City crew did. I think it would be adorable if we could all decide to do it. I’m always up for that idea. They are aware of this. It would need to be a group event. I can’t imagine doing it without my friends.

PIETERSE I’m always receptive to such suggestions! Working with everyone has been a joy, and it’d be intriguing to brainstorm how our characters might interact should we collaborate again. It could make for an interesting mental exercise!

I’M INTERESTED To catch up with those characters again would be delightful, but the feasibility hinges on the script, the storyline, and the cast. Indeed, I’d welcome such a development. If it doesn’t materialize into a film, I suppose I could be content with how things ended previously.

The Show’s Legacy

As more people, both new audiences and different generations, discover the show through streaming platforms, the cast and creator take time to consider the impact that being a part of this series has had on them personally, and how it has significantly shaped their lives.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel incredibly grateful and fortunate. We managed to bottle lightning with our cast – each actress was spot-on for their characters, adding depth and humor that truly brought the script to life. From the way it was filmed to Hanna’s pink lamp in her room, which sits proudly on my office shelf, every detail fell into place effortlessly. It’s not an easy feat, but everything just clicked on set. Being my first TV show, I didn’t fully grasp the challenges ahead because everyone gelled so seamlessly together. We were fortunate to have a fantastic line producer, Lisa Cochran, who ensured our ship stayed afloat throughout the process. On the day of our premiere, I was in New York for an ABC family event, and long before the show even aired, #PrettyLittleLiars was trending worldwide on Twitter. We knew if we didn’t mess it up, we had something that people were truly passionate about. I believe much of this success is due to Sara Shepard for creating this captivating world where we all got to play.

I’ve encountered numerous individuals who chose the name Aria or Emily for their daughter. More recently, in a restaurant, someone introduced herself as Aria’s mother, expressing gratitude for the television series “Pretty Little Liars” that helped her navigate challenging periods during her high school years. It’s heartening to know that my on-screen presence provided solace and escape from personal struggles for many viewers.

ALLEN Initially, none of us anticipated that our work would turn into such a significant cultural phenomenon, with fans sporting Spoby tattoos, speculating about “A” and potential storylines, or introducing the series to fresh audiences. Even today, I continue to encounter individuals who share their stories, saying, “You played a major role in my childhood years,” and I always appreciate that sentiment. Being part of something that touched people deeply, ignited emotions, instilled fear, and brought people together was truly special. From watch parties to online discussions, social media trends, and even unconventional viewpoints at the time – all these experiences illustrate the impact of storytelling. I’m eternally grateful for my part in this journey and the lasting legacy it has created since then.

As a devoted admirer, it’s as if I’m contributing to a groundbreaking series, a cultural juggernaut that refuses to fade. Despite the distance, I can’t escape its presence, with fans frequently expressing their affection through comments like “I adore Caleb!” or simply addressing me by that name. There’s a certain nostalgia associated with it. When you revisit it, you might think, “This oddly still resonates, yet it seems slightly outdated and the costumes are peculiar.” But it continues to captivate.

PIETERSE It’s a privilege and thrilling to contribute to history in such a manner. My character holds a special place in my heart, and reflecting on the journey brings me immense joy. It’s strange to be so familiar with a fictional person, but that’s what makes acting so captivating. It’s about slipping into someone else’s life, and what fun it was to portray being buried alive while pregnant. In essence, I took on every aspect of that role. I did everything, and I mean every bit of it.

MITCHELL Back then, I’d often make light of it by suggesting a ‘Golden Girls’-style take on it. It’s thrilling to think about its future developments. I’m delighted that we’re still discussing it 15 years down the line.

BENSON It’s fantastic to be a part of something that’s only recently gaining traction. On TikTok, I frequently come across young girls aged 12 and 13 who are experiencing it for the first time. It’s mind-blowing to see how people continue to invest their time and interest in it. I’m genuinely grateful to our fans for standing by us throughout this journey. Our experience wouldn’t have been as meaningful without everyone’s unwavering support, which truly meant the world to us.

The friendships initially formed on-screen, particularly between fan favorites Aria and Spencer, often referred to as “Sparia” by fans. These relationships deepened over time, leading to enduring friendships among the main cast members. In fact, they started calling each other like family.

ME Oh, the way that pair became so popular was just fantastic! It seems like Aria admired Spencer deeply, and I certainly admired Troian too. There’s a clear reflection of real-life relationships in this duo. One of my favorite quotes from Spencer to Aria was: “You may be small, but you’re mighty.

The idea emerged naturally, somewhat like the classic question of which came first, the chicken or the egg, during Lucy and my collaborative process and our unique relationship. Perhaps it was due to our height difference that sparked this. (Laughs.) There’s something endearing about that situation. We were all good friends, and I found immense joy in those scenes featuring the four of us. Additionally, I enjoyed the moments when the girls were able to pair off into their own little duos. Spencer and Hanna had a fantastic dynamic. With her dry wit and genuine demeanor, Spencer’s dialogue was full of gems. Their interaction was both dry and earnest, which made it adorable. Every time I got to share scenes with Shay as Emily, I felt a sense of kinship because they were both so determined. I thought, “Nothing will hinder these girls.” When Aria and Spencer were together, their humor and intellect complemented each other beautifully. I’m eternally grateful to everyone in the cast and crew who made this show a reality, as they went above and beyond. It truly felt like a family.

AS A GAMER: I’m still hanging out with the crew in our group chat, including Marlene. We always catch up there. The other day, I was chatting with Tyler and was hoping to meet up, but ended up running into Shay and Troian instead, and I see Marlene quite frequently. I also bumped into Lucy and Sasha at a few events this year. Every time we get together, it feels like no time has passed. We spent seven intense years working so much that we didn’t get to see our families or friends much, but we saw each other more than them. So, we became like family. I’m really grateful we still keep in touch. It’s awesome to watch everyone grow and see where their lives are going, as well as the little ones they have now. Since we’ve stayed so close, we’ll be a part of each other’s lives forever.

The most enjoyable aspect of being on the show for me was forming enduring friendships. Although we don’t see each other regularly, I often run into Troian, and we have children around the same age. Recently, I spoke with Ian, so we manage to stay connected. This experience had a significant impact on my life.

I’M VERY THANKFUL THAT THESE PEOPLE STILL REMAIN IN MY LIFE. Torrey DeVitto got married last year, and I had the honor of attending her wedding. Keegan and I frequently exchange lengthy, deeply philosophical voice messages. I believe the main reason I still use Instagram is to tease Shay Mitchell playfully. Lucy is a dear friend, and just yesterday, Troian and I exchanged texts. The bond we share remains strong.

LEWIS One key lesson from the series is this: Every member of the crew, every team player behind the scenes, the actors themselves, everyone associated with this production worked tirelessly, displayed genuine kindness, and was utterly dedicated. This camaraderie, which felt like a family, kept us going for seven seasons. The day it ended was heartbreaking and sad, but I believe we concluded at the perfect moment.

Secrets Answered

[King answers the most burning questions left from the series.]

Why did Eddie Lamb recognize Aria in Radley?

It’s logical to assume that Eddie might recognize Aria, since she had paid visits to both Spencer and Mona at the Radley sanitarium.

In the conversation between Mona and Aria at Radley, “Mona tells Aria, ‘M-A-Y-A is hidden within ‘Miss Aria You’re A Killer Not Ezra’s Wife.’ So, what secret information did Maya possess?

I couldn’t help but toy with Aria, casually dropping hints about Maya, much like how I used to amuse myself by manipulating my favorite dolls as a kid.

What made Alison, Charlotte, and Bethany each don a similar yellow blouse the evening Ali went missing? And can you recall the origin of that particular yellow top?

King Ali’s mother frequently purchased identical outfits for Charlotte and Alison, including matching yellow blouses. However, Charlotte’s clothing was stolen by Bethany while sneaking out of Radley. Consequently, we ended up having several sets of these yellow tops made. We went through quite a few of them due to this situation.

How did Bethany get the bracelet that said “Alison” on it?

The Bracelet Remains a Puzzle for Me. By the way, our bracelets became quite popular. Unfortunately, I can’t recall her name now, but we discovered her creations online initially. Later on, she expanded the line and began marketing them.

In the fourth season, fans were taken aback as one of their favorite duos seemed to break apart after it emerged that Ezra had known Alison and Aria before they became acquainted. Initially, spectators assumed he was “A” or associated with the “A-Team,” but this turned out to be a misdirection when Ezra clarified that he approached Aria to gather information for his book on Ali’s disappearance.

In another twist, it seemed like he wanted everyone to believe he was ‘Character A’, but in reality, he had his own motives. However, he wasn’t Character A. He harbored a significant secret, yet he wasn’t Character A. I found it intriguing that we provided him with a hideout, which I thought was quite interesting.

As a devoted fan, I found the intrigue surrounding the potential exploration of a grooming storyline in our favorite series quite captivating. It seemed that several writers were eager to delve into this aspect and examine it thoroughly. However, due to the beloved status of the characters involved, I can’t pinpoint who made the ultimate call, but it was intriguing to observe their journey down this path. Initially, I thought, “At last, we’ll uncover the truth about this relationship being a bit manipulative and inappropriate.” But alas, it turned out to be a red herring, and the revelation that Ezra wasn’t portrayed as a villain was somewhat disappointing. I’d love to hear Ian’s perspective on this unexpected twist.

PARAPHRASING There’s a bit of backstory connected with that storyline. At one point, I experienced some frustration. I felt somewhat restricted on the show, as if I couldn’t pursue other opportunities. I wasn’t given many roles, and I had a moment of panic where I thought this might harm my career and prevent me from trying out for different parts. Consequently, I requested to be written off. If my memory serves me right — this was around 12 years ago — they initiated the process of potentially letting me go because my character could get arrested or have to leave Rosewood. However, at the last minute, they opted against it, and the relationship proved too valuable, which was a nice compliment to me. As a result, I decided not to depart from the show. What followed was that I got a chance to delve into the darker side of Ezra, which was exhilarating. (Laughs.) To be able to reveal that he had been spying on them was fantastic. Stepping out of the likability box felt liberating. As I continued to explore this character, I began to appreciate the show more and fortunately, I didn’t leave it.

ALTERNATIVE There were numerous possibilities for character development. For instance, could Aria have participated in the mischief? I sometimes think she might have. After all, she was fiercely loyal to Ezra and would stand by him through thick and thin.
