As a passionate gamer and football enthusiast, I’ve got to say that Amazon Prime Video managed to pull in its largest NFL audience ever during the wild card playoff game. However, it didn’t quite reach the viewership numbers of previous streaming-exclusive matchups. Interestingly enough, the overall opening weekend of this year’s playoffs seems to be experiencing a slight dip compared to last season.
In prime-time on Saturday, the Baltimore Ravens’ victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers was watched by an impressive 22.07 million viewers via Amazon Prime Video, as reported by Nielsen. This viewership number surpasses any previous NFL game audience on the platform, outdoing a December 5 encounter between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers (17.29 million) by approximately 4.78 million more viewers.
At 9 p.m. ET, the viewership reached its highest point with a staggering 24.66 million viewers, marking Prime Video’s biggest simultaneous audience ever in the U.S. Nevertheless, the overall game failed to quite match last year’s streaming-only playoff duel on Peacock, which averaged 22.86 million viewers during the same Saturday evening time slot. Even earlier Christmas games on Netflix surpassed 24 million viewers this season.
On a Sunday afternoon late last week, Fox attracted the most viewers for the wild card round, with approximately 35.89 million people tuning in to watch the Philadelphia Eagles’ victory over the Packers. However, this year’s game saw a decrease of around 11% compared to the same timeframe last year, which had 40.16 million viewers for the Packers versus the Dallas Cowboys, also broadcast on Fox.
On a Sunday prime-time broadcast, NBC Sports drew approximately 29 million viewers in total (26.2 million on traditional television and 2.8 million via streaming) as the Washington Commanders clinched their victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the last second. However, this was a decline compared to the previous year, dropping by nearly 19% from the 35.8 million viewers it had attracted.
The statistics for CBS’s two wildcard matches scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays afternoons, along with the game on ABC and ESPN on Mondays, hadn’t been released by the time this article was published. We will update this story as soon as we receive them.
