Pro Tips: Beat Arena Rathian in Monster Hunter Wilds Quickly

In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Rathian Quest in The Arena presents a tough test. Successfully finishing this quest grants access to potent rewards. Unlike regular hunts in Monster Hunter Wilds where you can traverse extensive areas of the map to locate your quarry, Arena quests place you in a confined space, with no obstacles between you and your target. Although these quests are typically faster than standard hunts, they can also be more challenging: the arena’s design ensures both you and the monster have no escape routes.

Sometimes, arena quests restrict your equipment choices to particular loadouts, which might be vexing if you’re not familiar with the moveset of the assigned weapon. To add to the challenge, your performance in Arena quests is judged based on time: finishing a quest swiftly results in superior rewards. If you find yourself grappling with this particularly demanding, tightly timed arena battle in Monster Hunter Wilds against Rathian, here are some strategies that could aid you in victory.

Best Loadout For Arena Rathian

Should You Choose Set A, B, Or C?

Before diving into the Arena for a showdown with the ferocious Rathian, you’ve got three distinct gaming kits to select from. Each kit comes equipped with two unique weapons, a blend of armor that complements both, and a smorgasbord of various items. Here’s a breakdown of what each set offers, leaving out the standard issue of 10 Potions, 10 Mega Potions, 2 Max Potions, and 10 Rations that you’ll receive no matter which kit you pick.

Set Weapons Armor Consumables Talisman Mantle Decorations
A
  • Scaly Sword I (Sword & Shield)
  • Chata Clobberer II (Hammer)
  • Ajarakan Helm
  • Hirabami Mail
  • Ajarakan Vambraces
  • Ajarakan Coil
  • Hirabami Greaves
  • Antidote x 10
  • Large Barrel Bomb x 2
  • Evasion Charm I
  • Rocksteady Mantle
N/A
B
  • Dosha Fleshhacker II (Switch Axe)
  • Chthonian Flame I (Charge Blade)
  • Duna Helm
  • Nerscylla Mail
  • Duna Vambraces
  • Hirabami Coil
  • Duna Greaves
  • N.A
  • Poison Charm Ii
  • Mending Mantle
  • Quickswitch Jewel [1]
  • Dragon Jewel [1]
C
  • Shell Gunberd II (Gunlance)
  • Paretic Gunlance III (Gunlance)
  • G. Rathalos Helm
  • Rompompolo Mail
  • G. Rathalos Vambraces
  • Rompompolo Coil
  • G. Rathalos Greaves
  • Mega Barrel Bomb x 2
  • Might Seed x 10
  • Herbal Medicine x 5
  • Foray Charm I
  • Rocksteady Mantle
  • Crit Status Jewel II [2]
  • Paralyzer Jewel II [2]
  • Shockproof Jewel [1]

In my opinion, I’d consistently opt for set B, primarily because I have extensive knowledge with Switch Axe and Charge Blade. What stands out about it is that the Chthonian Flame series of Charge Blades inflicts Dragon elemental damage, which Rathian is particularly vulnerable to. Additionally, Dragon is the only kind of elemental damage that can be applied to all its parts, but unfortunately, there are no Thunder weapons in this selection, and in most instances, Dragon causes more damage than Thunder does.

Even though all three loadout options are still viable, go with the weapon type that makes you feel most at ease. If you happen to be playing with a companion (it’s always more fun, as Arena quests are better balanced in multiplayer), the Hammer/Sword & Shield combination works particularly well for this mission. The Sword and Shield has the ability to put the Rathian to sleep, granting you additional time, while the Hammer offers high damage and an easy-to-use move set that can lead you to victory by repeatedly bashing it.

How To Defeat Arena Rathian

Rathian Weaknesses

The table provides a detailed analysis of the vulnerabilities in Rathian, categorized according to its different body parts. As usual, the greater the number of stars, the less resistant that specific area is to the corresponding type of attack.

Part Sever Blunt Ammo Fire Water Thunder Ice Dragon
Head 4 stars 4 stars 4 stars Ineffective 1 star 2 stars 1 star 2 stars
Neck 2 stars 3 stars 2 stars Ineffective 1 star 1 star 1 star 2 stars
Torso 2 stars 2 stars 2 stars Ineffective 1 star 1 star 1 star 2 stars
Left Wing 3 stars 3 stars 3 stars Ineffective 1 star 1 star 1 star 2 stars
Right Wing 3 stars 3 stars 3 stars Ineffective 1 star 1 star 1 star 2 stars
Left Leg 3 stars 3 stars 2 stars Ineffective Ineffective 1 star Ineffective 1 star
Right Leg 3 stars 3 stars 2 stars Ineffective Ineffective 1 star Ineffective 1 star
Tail 3 stars 3 stars 2 stars Ineffective 1 star 1 star 1 star 2 stars

It appears that both kinds of physical harm offer a similar level of effectiveness when it comes to defeating Rathian, but Blunt (using a Hammer) holds a slight edge. When it comes to elemental damage, however, Dragon (with Charge Blade) is significantly stronger. Regardless of your choice, aim for the head of Rathian and try to avoid its torso. Utilize Focus Mode and the wound system to assist in your targeting.

Arena Rathian Moveset & Rewards

In the Arena, Rathian employs the same set of moves as its regular counterpart, making it familiar territory if you’ve squared off against one before. However, the confined space might add a layer of complexity when evading certain attacks. Keep a close eye on its mouth for clues about impending attacks.

When it stands tall, it’s getting ready to unleash its three-part breath assault. Spotting flames within its maw indicates that it’s gearing up to launch a fireball, causing the harmful effect of Fireblight upon impact. If you notice an orange glow, beware as the Rathian is preparing to leap into the air and execute its spinning tail whip combo.

The table below showcases the three possible ranks for completing Arena Rathian, complete with the time thresholds needed to obtain them and the corresponding prizes. It’s important to note that you will receive a Rathian Coin regardless of your rank. Earning a higher rank not only grants you the rewards from lower ranks but also additional ones.

Rank Time Unique Reward
A 5’30″00 N/A
B 10’00″00 Earrings of Dedication α design
C 50’00″00
  • Armorcharm
  • Powercharm

With that said, you should now feel prepared to conquer the Arena Rathian. This mission is challenging even for seasoned players, so keep in mind it might require some practice before you can secure an A rank. If you find yourself in a bind, consider asking your friends for help and you’ll likely finish this Monster Hunter Wilds quest within several tries.
