22 years after founding it, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have decided to step down as creative directors of Proenza Schouler. Starting from January 31st, they will no longer be involved with the brand. However, they are collaborating with the CEO Shira Suveyke Snyder to find a suitable replacement for their roles.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but fuel the buzz that McCollough and Hernandez are potential candidates to succeed Jonathan Anderson at LVMH’s Loewe. For quite some time now, Anderson has been associated with Dior, although no definitive announcement has been made to validate the ongoing speculation about the designer merry-go-round. Vanessa Friedman of the New York Times aptly notes, “It’s nearly unprecedented for a designer to depart from a stable brand they helped establish, especially at a relatively young age (McCollough and Hernandez are 46), unless there’s been a rift with a benefactor or they have plans for another opportunity.” The brand has remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind these designers’ decision to part ways.
McCollough and Hernandez are leaving their roles as creative directors at Proenza Schouler, but they will stay on the board and retain a minority ownership. In a statement, Hernandez expressed that it’s the perfect moment to step down from their active leadership within the company and pass the creative responsibility onto someone new. They have always appreciated taking risks and seeking adventure, and they feel ready for whatever lies ahead next. McCollough also mentioned that while change is never straightforward, making this decision – one that they’ve carefully thought through – feels like the ideal move at this point in their lives.
Reflecting an enduring, sophisticated European style in the world of fashion, a New York-based brand’s designers have piqued interest from renowned international fashion houses. In 2007, Valentino Fashion Group invested in the brand, and rumors suggest that LVMH previously discussed a collaboration with the designers to join their prestigious fashion brands. However, no official announcements have been made yet about where this design duo will head next.
