Puma Golf, a division of the well-known sportswear brand PUMA, is contesting the leaping tiger emblem used by Tiger Woods’ new label Sun Day Red, as they believe it is too similar to their own trademarked Jumping Cat logo. The German company argues that this resemblance might confuse customers.
In the court filing, PUMA argues that because the symbols on both their marks and the Leaping Cat logo are very alike, and because the products or services they represent might be similar or closely related, it’s quite possible that consumers could get confused between the two marks.
The Sun Day Red logo was designed with Tiger Woods in mind, showcasing 15 vertical lines representing his 15 major victories throughout his 28-year career. When unveiled last February, spectators noted similarities to the Arc’Teryx skeletal design and Slazenger’s jumping panther logo. In contrast, the PUMA emblem symbolizes a puma cat’s power, swiftness, and agility, and its earliest version dates back to 1948.
The case would go trial in September 2026 unless the two sides are able to reach a settlement.
