In the supernatural world of “Sinners”, the vampires drain a considerable amount of blood from their victims. However, when it comes to Ryan Coogler’s new action-horror movie, he found inspiration from an unusual source. During a recent episode of Get Rec’d on YouTube with Straw Hat Goofy, the director confessed that his concept of fear was significantly shaped by none other than DreamWorks Animation’s 2022 release, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”, a sequel to the spin-off film “Puss in Boots” from the beloved “Shrek” series.
It wasn’t the charming tabby cat from the Puss in Boots series that grabbed Coogler’s interest, but rather the ominous white wolf portraying Death. He shared how this movie’s main adversary inspired him to create the vampires for Sinners, stating, “Reflect on the villain Death, consider his distinctive traits [the eyes], think about his behavior.” In the video, now available on X/Twitter (see below), he also acknowledged Louis Gonzales, an illustrator working on the upcoming gothic story, who has over 20 years of experience at Pixar, for designing the blood-sucking scenes.
The film titled “Sinners” narrates the journey of twin brothers Smoke and Stack, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, as they seek a new beginning in their native town. However, their hopes are dashed when they uncover a deeper malevolence lurking in the region, such as the Ku Klux Klan. Previously, Ryan Coogler referred to the thriller as a vampire movie, but hinted that it’s not the only supernatural aspect in the film – implying that the protagonists might require more than just nine lives to endure the challenges ahead.
‘Sinners’ Is a Hit With Critics, Just Like ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’
Initial responses to the movie “Sinners ” have been incredibly favorable, with numerous critics praising it as one of the top films of the year. Despite its release being scheduled for Apr. 18, it has already earned a remarkable 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review for MovieWeb, Julian Roman stated that “Sinners ” masterfully depicts Black life in the harsh and impoverished Jim Crow-era South while showcasing a rich cultural backdrop filled with musical camaraderie. Furthermore, he described the villain as a relentless vampire.
Titled “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”, this movie garnered high praise upon its debut, earning a 95% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was applauded for its stunning animation, deep themes, and the exceptional voice acting of its star-studded cast, with Antonio Banderas leading the charge. Commercially, it proved to be a hit, amassing over $485 million at global box offices against an estimated production budget of around $90-110 million. As audiences flocked to cinemas, they eagerly watched as the franchise’s brave, fearless feline embarked on his most epic adventure yet, constantly outsmarting the notorious big, bad wolf.
In the movie “Sinners,” directed by Coogler, Jordan takes on the primary roles of twin characters, with Hailee Steinfeld portraying Mary, Jack O’Connell as Remmick, Wunmi Mosaku as Annie, Jayme Lawson as Pearl, Omar Benson Miller as Cornbread, Li Jun Li as Grace, and Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim. Making his debut in period film genre is singer-songwriter Miles Caton, who plays Sammie, an aspiring blues musician, in the story, joining the twins’ newly established juke joint to perform.
