As a long-time TV enthusiast who has seen countless award seasons come and go, I must say that this year’s Emmys Nominees Night event hosted by The Hollywood Reporter was nothing short of extraordinary! The glamour, the star power, and the sheer energy were palpable.
On a glamorous evening last Friday, The Hollywood Reporter and SAG-AFTRA inaugurated the Emmys weekend with a sparkling ceremony, honoring exceptional television talent during their Emmy Nominees Night gala.
I had the incredible opportunity to attend an unforgettable event, generously supported by Glenfiddich, Heineken, and Shake Shack, which took place at the stunning Stanley II mansion, offering a breathtaking view of Los Angeles. This event was graced by some of this year’s most promising talents such as Anna Sawai from “Shogun” and Hiroyuki Sanada, along with Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, and Nava Mau, stars of the captivating series “Baby Reindeer”. The evening commenced post-sunset, featuring Tyler James Williams from “Abbott Elementary” as the initial guest on the red carpet. Despite being nominated for the Emmys for the third consecutive year, Williams expressed to THR that the nomination never loses its charm: “There’s a wealth of exceptional TV shows out there, so it’s always incredibly unique and heartening when we receive a nod, and I think everyone puts in such an immense effort every year that we rarely cross paths. Therefore, it’s a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues.
At the event, some early attendees like Quinta Brunson, Selma Blair, Nikki Glaser, television showrunner Noah Hawley from ‘Fargo’, and Tadanobu Asano of ‘Shogun’ enjoyed panoramic views of the city from the living room of the house, which boasted an infinity pool for perfect snapshots. The guests nibbled on hors d’oeuvres served on trays and a vast charcuterie platter, along with samples of Shake Shack’s Black Truffle Burger and Black Truffle Parmesan Fries. The bar offered several choices from Heineken and a selection of themed cocktails, aptly named “City of Stars”, “Red Carpet Cocktail” and “The FYC.
At the gathering, there were several cast reunions happening. Sawai and Sanada paused to snap pictures of each other, while D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai and Devery Jacobs remained close. Woon-A-Tai has been nominated for best actor in a comedy category, and for the first time, the FX series is also nominated for best comedy series. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about the recognition for the show’s last season after previous oversights, Woon-A-Tai stated, “We’ve been putting in a lot of effort over a long period to make it happen – this has been something we’ve been working on for such a long time.
I too was in awe of Shogun’s unprecedented triumph, as it had already amassed 14 Emmy awards at the Creative Arts ceremonies, with even more anticipated wins at the Primetime Emmys this coming Sunday. As the star, I must admit, it’s overwhelming. We poured our hearts and efforts into crafting this masterpiece, working seamlessly together, blending Eastern and Western influences. The audience’s positive response and now this recognition, it’s truly humbling. It’s a lot to take in.
As a devoted admirer looking back, I can’t help but reminisce about the unforgettable events where Gadd, Gunning, and Mau were cherished attendees. The charming Gadd even paused for snapshots with fans like me; when I spoke with him later, he shared with THR that the past five months since the show’s debut have been an incredible, almost surreal rollercoaster. He admitted it’s been a whirlwind of events, and he’s still trying to catch his breath from all the excitement. The creators of Hacks, Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky, were also present, adding to the joyous atmosphere. Meanwhile, Mark Duplass, nominated for The Morning Show, mingled with fellow comedian Alex Edelman. Lastly, Kali Reis and Zachary Quinto from True Detective: Night Country graced us with their presence, making the rounds and contributing to an evening I’ll never forget.
Midway through the function, President Joe Shields initiated a cheer, revealing the lower level of the building where attendees could explore a covert disco and movie room concealed behind a bookcase door. Throughout the evening, DJ Kiss played music that kept the celebration lively until the wee hours.
Alongside Lisa Ann Walter, Alex Borstein, Harvey Guillén, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Liza Colón-Zayas, John Bradley, Lisa Rinna, Lilly Singh, Aja Naomi King, Sherry Cola and Heidi Klum, several other well-known figures graced the event.
