Rachel Sennott Tells Us What It Was Like Being Backstage For SNL’s Beavis And Butt-Head Sketch, And How It Affects Her Opinion Of The Show

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can truly appreciate the behind-the-scenes drama that unfolds in productions like Saturday Night Live (SNL). Having dabbled in both writing and performing myself, I find myself drawn to the “kitchen” side of things, much like Rachel Sennott. There’s an undeniable allure to witnessing the creative process that shapes the final product we ultimately see on screen.

Only those who have endured the ‘war’ of working behind the scenes on a powerhouse show like Saturday Night Live truly understand its workings. There are numerous anecdotes about the wounds earned in the entertainment industry on SNL, with discarded sketches as comedians strive to perfect recurring characters or create something that could go viral. Jason Reitman’s current film aims to portray the enchantment involved in bringing Saturday Night Live to our screens every week. Rachel Sennott, a co-star of Saturday Night, offers a glimpse into her experience working backstage during the production of a legendary SNL sketch. Here’s what she revealed.

During a chat with the cast of the Saturday Night movie, I posed a question to Sennott, who has a background in both writing and acting, about which role she’d enjoy playing on SNL for an entire season. Sennott penned the 2023 comedy “Bottoms” and starred in it, but is also recognized for her appearances in “Bodies, Bodies, Bodies” (a film that hasn’t received its due recognition), and the 2020 horror movie “Shiva Baby”. I was curious if she’d rather write or act on SNL, and her response referenced a well-known sketch from Ryan Gosling’s time on the show. Sennott shared with TopMob her thoughts on this particular SNL skit.

In her role, Rachel Sennott seems to have a penchant for the behind-the-scenes aspects, rather than the final presentation. She’s more interested in understanding the intricate process of creating something, such as figuring out how the sausage is made, compared to simply delivering it to the audience. However, when you’re part of the creative team responsible for crafting something as peculiar and captivating as the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch on SNL, the exhilaration of innovation can become addictive, driving your career towards continued creativity pursuit.

Ryan Gosling turned out to be remarkably fitting for portraying an ordinary man reminiscent of Beavis in a Saturday Night Live sketch. This role transcended viral fame and even influenced his publicity efforts for The Fall Guy earlier this year. I’m convinced that SNL co-star Heidi Gardner is still laughing over the likenesses of both Gosling and Mikey Day, who brought Butt-Head to life in a live-action setting.

Currently, I’m all hyped up about Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” flick that’s got everyone cracking up in anticipation for its 2024 release. As the Awards season rolls around, things can get pretty heavy with the serious movies, so it’s a breath of fresh air to have something light and funny like this one. And if you’ve already caught “Saturday Night,” trust me, you won’t want to miss out on this awesome scene that Reitman took a spin into… or should I say skated?

If you’re interested in discovering more viral moments from Saturday Night Live, don’t forget to continue watching its 50th season, which is a long-standing late-night establishment. The upcoming lineup of hosts features Michael Keaton on October 19 and John Mulaney in November.
