In the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, nothing particularly standout occurred, but followers of Atlus were delighted by the unveiling of Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army. This spin-off series from the Shin Megami Tensei franchise has been eagerly anticipated, especially since its predecessor, Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne, was re-released some years back, generating excitement among fans who were hoping for a similar release.
After quite some time, it’s been confirmed that the Devil Summoner series has made its comeback, following Atlus’ pattern of remastering games from the PS2 era. With this release and Shin Megami Tensei 3 now accessible, there’s a good possibility that more of these re-releases might be in the pipeline for us by the company.
Titled originally as “Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army,” the updated version, known as “Raidou Remastered,” may be slightly tricky to pronounce but promises to deliver the same high-quality gameplay experience. Similar to the remaster of Shin Megami Tensei 3, this re-release improves the graphics of the PS2 version and introduces user-friendly features. Incorporating voice acting, a lock-on system, an expanded roster of summonable devils, and additional save slots are just a few of the enhancements players can look forward to in this revamped edition.
Reflecting on the recent Nocturne remaster, I must admit that while it’s not a complete overhaul, adding voice acting, quick save options, and enhanced graphics definitely takes it up a notch. Although it doesn’t transform Raidou’s world into a modern gaming experience, these improvements undeniably make this action RPG feel less laborious, addressing a common critique about the Shin Megami Tensei games regarding tedium.
During the PlayStation 2 era, Devil Summoner stood out in the Atlus collection due to its introduction of real-time combat to the Shin Megami Tensei series. This innovative approach added diversity to their lineup of role-playing games and successfully found new ways to use these legendary demons. Remarkably, it even led to a sequel soon after. It’s intriguing that Atlus didn’t package it with Raidou Remastered, but they might still release Raidou Remastered 2 next year.
With SMT 3: Nocturne and Raidou now available on contemporary systems, fans eagerly anticipate Atlus remastering their other PS2 role-playing games. The success of the second Raidou game could warrant a remake. Die-hard Shin Megami Tensei enthusiasts are hoping for a revival of the Digital Devil Saga trilogy soon, as these games delve deeper into the series’ dark themes and boast impressive monster designs.

For those wondering, the classic Atlus’ Persona games from the PS2 era are still worth playing. The remake of Persona 3 (P3: Reload) is outstanding, and Persona 4 Golden is easily accessible on contemporary platforms. Rumors hint at a possible Persona 4 remake, though it may not be necessary, but if it’s anything like the original, it’s bound to be fantastic.
On June 19th, the enhanced version of Raidou titled “Raidou Remastered: The Enigma of the Soul-less Army” will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and personal computers (PC).
