As a gamer who grew up with Harry Potter and spent countless hours immersed in J.K Rowling’s magical world, I can’t help but feel a pang of excitement when it comes to the casting decisions for the upcoming HBO series. The original actors are iconic, and their roles will forever be etched in our memories, but change is inevitable, and sometimes, it brings fresh perspectives that breathe new life into beloved characters.
For the upcoming HBO’s “Harry Potter” series remake, each role carries a substantial burden since the characters and actors portraying them in the previous films are deeply cherished. Lately, Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort, was questioned about who should embody The Dark Lord in this new interpretation of J.K. Rowling’s book series. To his delight, he expressed support for a highly acclaimed, Academy Award-winning thespian.
Ever since the unveiling of the new Harry Potter series, there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding who will portray the iconic characters. Moreover, fans have been eagerly suggesting their ideal cast members – with Andrew Garfield being a popular choice for Lupin. More recently, it was revealed that Mark Rylance is a strong contender for Dumbledore, signifying a significant step in this casting process. Now, the original Voldemort, Ralph Fiennes, has expressed his approval for Cillian Murphy stepping into the role of the main antagonist. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Fiennes made these remarks:
It’s a great idea to consider Cillian as an actor. In fact, I wholeheartedly endorse him. I strongly support the choice of Cillian.
In response to fans wondering who would be ideal to portray He Who Shall Not Be Named in the series “Conclave”, they suggested the actor from “Oppenheimer”. Excitedly, Fiennes endorsed the idea of his co-star from “28 Years Later” taking on this role.
Honestly, I get why he did too.
In the Harry Potter films, Ralph Fiennes portrays Voldemort with a soft-spoken, calm demeanor that creates an unsettling, genuinely chilling atmosphere as he moves through the magical realm, rebuilding his power and planning to vanquish Harry Potter. Given his performances in Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer, it’s clear that Fiennes possesses the depth and intensity required to convincingly embody such a complex and malevolent character.
Other Projects Cillian Murphy And Ralph Fiennes Have In The Works:
In addition to their other roles, both Murphy and Fiennes are scheduled to appear in the upcoming film titled “28 Years Later”, which is set for release in 2025.
Plus, it’d be fun to see this actor take on such an iconic part.
Given that the actor from “The Grand Budapest Hotel” was also a cast member in the Harry Potter series, portraying Voldemort from “Goblet of Fire” through “Deathly Hallows”, it’s challenging to envision any other performer embodying such an iconic character as the Dark Lord. After all, it requires an actor of immense talent to bring this role to life.
I think Cillian Murphy has what it takes, though.
Ralph Fiennes hasn’t officially confirmed his role as Voldemort yet, and it seems we might have a long wait ahead before we know who will ultimately play him. This is because the character doesn’t fully appear until the fourth book/movie. So, it’s unlikely they would cast him in the early films unless they intend to use his voice or likeness for Voldemort’s brief appearance on Professor Quirrell’s head in the first movie, “Sorcerer’s Stone”.
As we eagerly anticipate casting announcements for the new Harry Potter series, let’s hope they select talented actors similar to the one endorsed by the original Voldemort actor. In the meantime, if you want to revisit Ralph Fiennes portraying the iconic villain, you can stream the Harry Potter movies on Peacock or Max with a subscription.
