Originally, three renowned directors – Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma, and Shekhar Kapur – planned to jointly create the classic Bollywood film, “Dil Se”, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Koirala, and Preity Zinta. This collaboration was initiated due to the emergence of corporate studios, but it eventually disintegrated. Recently, Ram Gopal Varma disclosed that he and Mani Ratnam had creative disagreements with Shekhar Kapur’s wish to work alongside another director, leading them to understand that the partnership wasn’t viable in the long run.
In a recent conversation with Etimes, Ram Gopal Verma revealed that Shekhar Kapur first proposed the idea as corporations were starting to take an interest. At first, it appeared promising, but after announcing it for Dil Se, Verma came to understand that it wouldn’t be successful. He explained, “I gradually understood it wouldn’t succeed.
He pointed out that whereas Shekhar only directs a movie once every six years and Mani does so every two years, his own pace is much faster, completing three films per year. However, this fast pace seems to be unsustainable.
According to RGV, it was Shekhar Kapur who proposed the idea for a joint project. Yet, both RGV and Mani found issue with Shekher’s proposal to work with another director on a film, resulting in some disagreements off-camera.
He stated that “Shekhar was planning to collaborate with a certain director on a movie. (11:00) This idea, however, didn’t sit well with me and Mani. As a result, we began expressing our disapproval. We found ourselves criticizing Shekhar.
I, as one of the team members, recognized Ram Gopal Verma’s point that our strong-willed nature could potentially complicate working on a single project without risking our camaraderie. However, we chose to move forward with “Dil Se” due to its prior announcement, despite our initial concerns.
In the spirit of transparency, I must confess that neither myself nor Mani Ratnam had a creative or financial hand in the making of Dil Se. Jokingly, I’d say that on the night we watched it unfold, Shekhar Kapur and I found ourselves in the audience, much like any other moviegoers, eagerly awaiting the story to unfurl.
In a natural and easy-to-read style, we could say: Mani Ratnam made his first directorial venture in Hindi with the 1998 film Dil Se. Although the romantic musical drama didn’t have impressive box office earnings, the music, created by A.R. Rahman, remains highly acclaimed to this day.
