Ramaswamy Won’t Serve on Trump’s Government Efficiency Commission as He Mulls Run for Ohio Governor

The initial priority for the Department of Government Efficiency has been restructured, with a single figure now taking charge.

Vivek Ramaswamy has stepped down from the commission backed by President Donald Trump, as confirmed by authorities shortly after the new administration began on Monday. This means that Elon Musk, the billionaire, is now the only one overseeing the cost-reduction project.

In 2024, businessman Ramaswamy, who previously aimed to become the GOP presidential nominee, has hinted at his intentions to contest for the position of Ohio’s governor in the following year. Originally from Cincinnati, Ramaswamy, aged 39, had expressed interest in the Senate seat left empty by Vice President JD Vance, until Governor Mike DeWine appointed Lt. Gov. Jon Husted as his replacement.

Vivek Ramaswamy significantly contributed to the development of DOGE, as stated by Anna Kelly, our commission’s representative. Given his plans to pursue political office and the organizational setup we announced today, he must now step away from DOGE. We deeply appreciate his valuable input during the past 2 months and anticipate that his future role will be instrumental in making America exceptional once again.

Trump chose Musk and Ramaswamy to head DOGE, a non-governmental team tasked by Trump to explore methods for reducing federal workforce, trimming programs, and decreasing federal regulations – actions that are integral components of what the incumbent president refers to as his “Save America” plan for his second term.

Musk’s participation has sparked ethical debates due to the fact that SpaceX, the firm he started and oversees, holds substantial military contracts and vies for work from NASA. Additionally, his Tesla electric vehicle company, along with other business ventures, might gain advantages from decisions made during Trump’s presidency.

Historically, attempts to shrink and limit the federal government’s reach have often faced opposition due to the fact that people become resistant when they perceive potential reductions in popular programs that are vital for millions of Americans – providing employment, healthcare, military protection, and essential daily services.

Ramaswamy, one of the world’s most prosperous individuals from the millennial generation, amassed his fortune in the field of biotechnology. Subsequently, he shifted his focus towards politics. He gained recognition on the conservative side due to his passionate opposition to identity politics and initiatives promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

He’s emerged as a key voice in Donald Trump’s populist “Make America Great Again” campaign. Following his fourth-place finish in the initial Republican primary caucuses in Iowa, he voiced his support for Trump.
