In the fast-paced thriller “The Amateur“, Rami Malek swiftly transforms from a timid cryptographer to a lethal assassin within mere minutes. This film, an adaptation of Robert Littell’s classic novel, is a highly implausible revenge tale filled with skilled actors, globe-trotting murders, and impressive visual effects. However, the storyline follows a predictable path where every puzzle and character slot seamlessly into place. Although the ending is never in question, viewers still find pleasure in seeing cold-blooded mercenaries receiving their due retribution. To put it simply, our angry protagonist demonstrates remarkable ingenuity in his relentless pursuit of vengeance.

In their own home, Charles Heller (Malek) fiddles about in the garage, while his wife, who cherishes him deeply, prepares for a journey to London. Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan) takes care to ensure that Charlie, who is meticulous, has checklists to maintain order at home. They share a tender goodbye before Charlie embarks on his workday as a seasoned cryptographer, delving into the heart of the CIA’s Langley, Virginia headquarters. Before diving into classified information, Charlie undergoes multiple rigorous security checks.

Boy Meets Girl, Girl Blows Up, Boy Seeks Vengeance

In this scenario, an undercover agent has shared confidential messages meant for his eyes exclusively. Charlie ponders where on earth this enigmatic figure could be while he deciphers highly classified data. Just as he’s engrossed, a somber-looking Deputy Director Alex Moore (Holt McCallany) startles him with a visit. No, Charlie hasn’t been keeping tabs on the news. Moore guides Charlie to Director Samantha O’Brien’s office (Julianne Nicholson). She delivers heart-wrenching news: Sarah was killed in a terrorist attack. Shocked, Charlie can hardly believe the chilling footage of her final moments.

He employs all available resources to expose the ones responsible for the murders, and that’s how Charlie operates. However, when he shares his findings with Moore, he encounters resistance. They advise him to rest and consult psychologists, assuring him that they will apprehend Sarah’s killers. But Charlie isn’t satisfied with this response. Instead, he wants to mete out justice directly against the perpetrators. Unless they equip him for the task, he threatens to disclose the CIA’s most classified information.

From IT Geek to CIA Killer

In this story, The Amateur excels in his initial act. Characterized by social awkwardness and introversion, Charlie struggles to connect with people face-to-face, finding comfort instead behind a keyboard. Sarah, the stunning woman he adored, was his entire universe. Her passing leaves him in a state of confusion, driving him relentlessly towards a quest for justice. Malek provides Charlie with a purpose, using his strategic and efficient abilities that defy typical black ops agent stereotypes, yet prove immensely valuable due to his ability to think outside the box.

In a surprising twist, the inexperienced protagonist veers away from their initially rigid narrative introduction. Laurence Fishburne plays Col. Robert Henderson, tasked with mentoring Charlie. Despite understanding Charlie’s drive, Henderson doubts the scrawny IT expert’s ability to succeed. Charlie seems doomed on the battlefield; all Henderson needs is to keep him engaged until Moore’s team can decipher how Charlie concealed damning evidence. The training session is comically brief. It’s only outdone by Charlie’s escape from digital monitoring, a feat that seems impossible but he manages to dodge electronic detection at every turn.

A Top-Tier Cast

In the film by Director James Hawes, who has previously worked on British TV series such as Doctor Who, Penny Dreadful, and Slow Horses, and more recently Anthony Hopkins’ One Life, visual effects are employed to depict the technology monitoring Charlie’s actions and strategies against Henderson. However, things take an unexpected turn when each character inexplicably hits their mark. Subsequently, a classic game of cat-and-mouse unfolds as our resourceful protagonist, who was completely hidden mere moments ago, manages to evade capture, much like an elusive weasel. This sequence might seem illogical, but the idea is that Charlie remains undetected, only to be found when least expected.

In my perspective as a devoted fan, it seems like Sarah’s adored charm of Charlie’s character is fading away, making me wonder if he truly has the courage to carry out his grisly scheme. The enigmatic antagonist, played by Michael Stuhlbarg, delivers an impactful monologue about the audacity required to end a life so intimately. It’s a hands-on job, he says. This transformation is designed to leave us questioning Charlie’s dwindling humanity. So, one has to ask, has the innocent sweetness that Sarah cherished been entirely erased?

In the initial scenes, Brosnahan is portrayed during the attack in digital simulations and as a spectral figure in Charlie’s recollections. Hawes effectively maintains her presence throughout the movie, but there could have been more emotional resonance if we had seen more flashbacks of their past or if the opening scene was expanded upon. It’s evident that the connection between Malek and Brosnahan is strong at first, but it seems less convincing in later instances, hinting that the story could have benefited from a deeper exploration of their relationship history.

* Nonetheless, I went along with the premise, rooted for the righteous side, and enjoyed the exciting spy gadgets.
