As a dedicated follower of the Indian cinema scene, I have had the privilege of witnessing the evolution and revolution of the Hindi film industry through the lens of some truly visionary directors. Ram Gopal Varma, with his gritty and raw approach to storytelling, has always been one such trailblazer. His latest admiration for Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s work on Animal is a testament to the power of authentic, impactful cinema that resonates deeply with audiences.
Ram Gopal Varma, a well-known director in Bollywood, is recognized for creating movies such as Sarkar, Raat, Bhoot, Company, and others featuring Amitabh Bachchan. Known for depicting intense and realistic action scenes, he recently expressed admiration for Sandeep Reddy Vanga and his film Animal, stating that the action in it continues to ‘impress’ him.
At the Animal vs Wild Animal gathering, Ram Gopal Varma had an exclusive chat with Reddy. They shared significant insights about their shared love for cinema, their professional journeys, and creating powerful scenes in their individual movies.
In addition to other movies, RGV addressed the graphic violence featured in the film starring Ranbir Kapoor, sparking much debate within our community. Notably, Varma is recognized for creating films brimming with gritty violence, challenging established norms, and portraying bloody characters.
He appreciated Vanga’s portrayal of viewers, finding it powerful as the violence was fueled by the deeply-felt emotions of the characters, such as Ranbir and Bobby Deol. The director of Sarkar reminisced about a violent scene from his movie, noting similarities with the depiction in Vanga’s work.
He shared that it was more powerful than observing armies clashing. Interestingly, I recall discussing the epic of Shiva with Nagarjuna during the filming of Agni Putrudu. I explained to him that the violence in Shiva would be far more raw and intense compared to explosions going off or knives being sharply sliced.
Ram Gopal Varma elaborated on the impact of the film’s violent scenes, saying, “The violence resonated with me similarly to Ranbir’s scenes in Animal, particularly the low-angle shot – it still lingers with me today.
Furthermore, Varma commended Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s composed personality, which stands in stark contrast to the intense violence depicted in his films. He commented, “I never sense anger within you. Perhaps it’s a part of your characters or you skillfully conceal that emotion for your roles, or maybe you are simply distinct from the characters you bring to life.
In the movie, titled “Animal”, Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol played the main characters. The film centered around the theme of a father-son relationship and was one of the highest-grossing films in 2023. The creators have also announced plans for a sequel, named “Animal Park”.
