Stepping into the limelight of film criticism, let me share my insights on Jason Statham’s remarkable journey during the 2010s. A decade that catapulted him from a global star to an unstoppable force in Hollywood, I might add. In this period, Statham’s output became more frequent, averaging two movies per year – quite a feat!
Now, you might think these films were just your typical fist-flying, adrenaline-pumping action flicks. And while they certainly had their fair share of those, what set Statham apart was his daring willingness to experiment. He graced the screens in an animated movie, a genre not often explored by action stars, and a comedy, a genre that showcased his versatility and comedic timing. Both films were met with warm reception, demonstrating Statham’s ability to captivate audiences regardless of genre boundaries.
During the 2010s, I found myself part of one of the globe’s largest film series: Fast & Furious. This move significantly propelled my career, positioning me as one of the world’s top box office draws. Regrettably, I declined to revisit the franchise that catapulted me to fame: The Transporter. Many fans yearned to see Frank Martin in action once more, but I felt both the financial terms and the script weren’t satisfactory. However, as they say in Hollywood, nothing is set in stone forever.
Here is how Statham’s 2010s work ranks, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

’13’ (2010)
Tomatometer: 7%
In the movie “13“, it’s Vince (Sam Riley) who has recently come across a letter meant for someone deceased. The letter mentions an enigmatic competition with substantial monetary prizes at stake. Given his hardships, he sees no other alternative but to take on the identity of the departed and enter this tournament. Once inside, he is compelled to jeopardize his life for the entertainment of affluent spectators, including one portrayed by Statham.
Less Statham, Less Fun
The movie serves as a reinterpretation of the Georgian-French film “13 Tzaméti” directed by Géla Babluani. Like its predecessor, it delivers similar suspenseful moments, yet presents a distinct colorful aesthetic instead of the grayscale imagery of the original. Notable actors like Mickey Rourke and 50 Cent deliver intense performances. Regrettably, many critics found the storyline to be nonsensical, often labeling it as “an explosive, poorly executed cartoon.
19
‘Killer Elite’ (2011)
Tomatometer: 27%
Danny Bryce, a former special ops agent living in seclusion, is forced back into action when his mentor, Hunter (Robert De Niro), gets captured. Rather than taking on the challenge single-handedly like other Statham characters, Danny gathers a squad of commandos and embarks on a mission to the target location. However, this operation won’t be straightforward.
Wasting a Great Cast
In Killer Elite, there’s an abundance of talent which results in superior acting compared to what one usually sees in Jason Statham films. Additionally, the film is based on real events. Regrettably, character development is lacking. Critics have described it as a typical, disposable Jason Statham vehicle that coincidentally features Clive Owen and Robert De Niro.
18
‘Wild Card’ (2015)
Tomatometer: 30%
According to William Goldman’s 1985 novel “Heat” and the 1986 movie starring Burt Reynolds, the film “Wild Card” features Statham as Nick Wild, a tough-as-nails Las Vegas bodyguard with a penchant for gambling. When his escort friend is attacked by a gangster, he swiftly metes out justice. However, this act sets off a chain of events leading to the mob pursuing him.
One Man Against the Mob
As a film enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of watching “Wild Card” directed by the exceptional Simon West, known for his work on films like “Tomb Raider,” “Con Air,” and “The Expendables 2”. This movie offers a gripping glimpse into the shady corners of Las Vegas. It’s been praised as an upgrade from the Burt Reynolds version, but let me tell you, it’s all about the action. Critics have noted that “hardcore Jason Statham fans might find something to appreciate in Wild Card,” but they stopped short of recommending it, stating bluntly that “other action enthusiasts should steer clear.
17
‘Mechanic: Resurrection’ (2016)
Tomatometer: 31%
In the initial scenes of “Mechanic: Resurrection,” contract assassin Arthur Bishop (played by Jason Statham) is enjoying a peaceful life in Brazil. However, his tranquility is shattered when an old enemy abducts his lover, Gina (portrayed by Jessica Alba). This villain demands that Bishop eliminates several prominent figures as a condition for Gina’s release.
Arm-twisting and Arm twister
The cinematographer Daniel Gottschalk is praised for creating visually stunning scenes reminiscent of Eugène Delacroix’s masterpieces. Unfortunately, the stunt coordinator’s contributions were not credited. The pool assassin scene was particularly impressive. However, some critics argue that Mechanic: Resurrection shouldn’t have been brought back to life, as they felt it lacked substance beyond a few entertaining action sequences, implying that the franchise may be better off left in its resting place.
16
‘The Expendables 3’ (2014)
Tomatometer: 32%
In the movie The Expendables 3, there are more members of the team and they face a larger mission. Interestingly, their co-founder, Conrad Stonebanks (played by Mel Gibson), has transformed into a brutal arms dealer who aims to dismantle the very unit he helped establish. However, the rest of the group isn’t about to let that happen.
Third Time’s Not a Charm
In the memory of many viewers, The Expendables 3 is more renowned for an off-screen mishap than its cinematic merit. During filming in Somalia, Jason Statham came close to meeting his end when a mechanical failure caused a truck to tumble off a pier during a dock chase sequence. Unfortunately, the action sequences generally fail to impress. The movie’s only redeeming quality is its witty dialogue. Be sure to listen for the humorous exchange between Wesley Snipes’ character and someone inquiring about his prison sentence. Critics noted similarities, suggesting that, like its predecessors, The Expendables 3 provides a modest dose of all-star excitement for fans of vintage action thrillers. However, they felt that given the abundance of star power, it should have been much more enjoyable.
15
‘Parker’ (2013)
Tomatometer: 41%
In the movie titled “Parker”, the character Parker (played by Jason Statham) is known as one of the world’s top thieves. When his last heist doesn’t go as planned, he steps away, which leads his previous associates to turn against him. Consequently, he seeks revenge and teams up with Leslie (Jennifer Lopez), a real estate agent, to steal their upcoming major haul.
Smooth Criminal
In summary, critics have labeled “Parker” as a standard, complex heist film, but it’s a label that might not hold up upon viewing. Despite its flaws, the movie stands out for its stunning visuals and the smooth performance of Jason Statham, who exhibits a Bond-like charm, particularly during his scenes with Jennifer Lopez. In essence, it’s a less-than-stellar film that you shouldn’t miss.
14
‘The Expendables’ (2010)
Tomatometer: 42%
In “The Expendables,” a squad of top-tier mercenaries, headed by Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), are recruited for a mission to depose a supposedly evil dictator in Vilena, an island located in the Gulf of Mexico. Yet, they uncover that it is not the dictator who is the true antagonist, but instead a renegade CIA agent named James Munroe (Eric Roberts), who controls the country’s leader. What will their next move be?
Testosterone Fest
Harking back to the rough-and-tumble ’80s and ’90s, where macho men often resorted to fisticuffs and firearms, this movie delivers entertainment in a similar vein as its predecessors from that era. Jason Statham fits right in alongside the more seasoned actors. However, Rotten Tomatoes-approved critics believe the audience could have been given more excitement, considering the star-studded cast. Essentially, they felt that The Expendables “delivers on the old-school action it promises, but with such a talented ensemble, the action film should have packed a stronger punch.
13
‘Homefront’ (2013)
Tomatometer: 42%
In the setting of “Homefront”, former DEA agent Phil Broker (Statham) enjoys a tranquil existence in a quaint Louisiana town alongside his daughter. However, peace is disrupted when he intervenes in a school bullying situation, resulting in him having issues with a local criminal kingpin.
Don’t Mess with Family
Although it showcases a talented cast, ‘Homefront’ unfortunately lacks originality and merely echoes classic action thrillers without offering any fresh perspectives within the genre.
12
‘The Meg’’ (2018)
Tomatometer: 47%
In the movie “The Meg,” an unexpected danger resurfaces – the once believed extinct megalodon, measuring an impressive 75 feet long (around 23 meters). This ancient sea monster has made a return and is causing chaos in the oceans. To combat this threat, a forward-thinking marine scientist enlists the help of renowned rescue diver Jonas Taylor, played by Jason Statham.
Big Budget Movie With Gripping B-Movie Thrills
Critics who are certified by RT found that “The Meg offers viewers an opportunity for a classic B-movie monster adventure, but falls short in delivering the expected excitement or the enjoyable campiness needed.” However, it’s worth noting that their opinions might not align with everyone’s. This film is engaging and innovative, as it places Statham in uncharted territories. It’s intriguing to watch him engage in battles beyond fighting henchmen and crime lords. Kudos should also be extended to the team responsible for designing the creature.
11
‘Blitz’ (2011)
Tomatometer: 48%
As a seasoned film critic, let me share my thoughts on the gripping thriller, “Blitz.” In this gritty London-set narrative, I find myself delving into the mystery of who’s behind the chilling murders of officers linked to the South East police force. The enigmatic killer remains elusive, their motives shrouded in darkness. Enter DS Tom Brant (played by Jason Statham), a tenacious detective tasked with tracking down this ruthless adversary.
However, it quickly becomes apparent that this is no ordinary cat-and-mouse chase. The film’s opening scenes hint at a complex, labyrinthine plot that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Brant’s pursuit of the killer promises to be anything but straightforward, making “Blitz” a must-watch for anyone craving a challenging and suspenseful cinematic experience.
Hunter Vs Hunted
In a unique twist, a movie starring Jason Statham seems to lean more towards a modern noir style rather than the typical action-thriller. This is an interesting departure, and it works quite well. When life’s grim, having an actor capable of delivering a somber expression is comforting. Jason Statham fits that bill perfectly. However, the film does have its flaws. Critics described it as follows: “Blitz is a mediocre crime thriller, constructed from overly familiar elements. Despite a strong performance by Jason Statham, the movie gets lost within the confines of genre conventions.” This evaluation seems fair.
10
‘Redemption’ aka ‘Hummingbird’ (2013)
Tomatometer: 49%
Joey (played by Statham) is once again grappling with the persistent issues common in veterinary work, which seem to persist without resolution. He has returned to London following a deployment in Afghanistan, finding himself jobless and homeless. To compound his troubles, Joey is also battling PTSD. Matters become even more dire when he encounters one of the city’s nuns.
Life After War
In collaboration with the creator of “Peaky Blinders,” Steven Knight, Jason Statham delivered one of his finest non-American films. The blend of drama and action was skillfully executed, offering viewers more intelligent dialogue prior to the action. Critics appreciated the movie’s depth, remarking that it had “more substance than typical Jason Statham action thrillers,” but were slightly let down as they felt it didn’t fully exploit its potential – or make the most of Statham’s powerful, dedicated performance.
9
‘The Mechanic’ (2011)
Tomatometer: 54%
In a modern adaptation of the 1972 film titled “The Mechanic”, we follow Arthur Bishop (played by Statham), a skilled assassin often referred to as ‘the mechanic’. This professional is exceptionally good at making his kills appear as suicides, accidents, or crimes committed by petty criminals. Following the death of his mentor, Bishop takes on the man’s son and educates him in the deadly craft. However, their bond will not remain harmonious for long.
No Attempt at Fixing the Genre
Critics who are certified by RT found that “Jason Statham and Ben Foster deliver entertaining acts, however, this revamped version lacks depth due to excessive violence and action movie tropes.” Despite this, fans of Statham might appreciate the over-the-top violence as it aligns with their expectations. The film could have incorporated more innovative deaths, but on a fundamental level, it manages to work effectively.
8
‘Gnomeo & Juliet’ (2011)
Tomatometer: 55%
The animated film, titled “Gnomeo & Juliet,” unfolds in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the hometown of the renowned playwright William Shakespeare. Here, a longstanding disagreement between Miss Capulet and Mr. Montague escalates over whose garden is superior. The decorative gnomes placed in their respective flower beds are also caught up in this feud. However, an unexpected turn occurs when Gnomeo (portrayed by James McAvoy), from one side, and Juliet (Emily Blunt), from the other, find themselves falling deeply in love. This romantic entanglement adds an intriguing twist to the storyline, with Tybalt, voiced by Jason Statham, serving as Gnomeo’s adversary.
A Fun and Unique Romeo & Juliet Adaptation
This animated film, with stars like Michael Caine, Patrick Stewart, and Ozzy Osbourne lending their voices, is bound to melt your heart. The music by Elton John and Lady Gaga makes it even sweeter. Critics praised the movie for having many inspiring moments but noted that it might have been a bit too focused on itself.
7
‘Safe’ (2012)
Tomatometer: 59%
Luke Wright, a former cage fighter now grappling with grief over his family’s untimely death at the hands of the Russian mob following an accidental fixed fight, discovers renewed meaning when he crosses paths with Mei, a brilliant young mathematician with an extraordinary memory, who is being pursued by the Russian mob, a Chinese Triad, and corrupt NYPD officials.
Mei Will be Safe
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes felt that Safe was “overly formulaic and didn’t distinguish itself from other action thrillers,” but isn’t that an understatement? With a criminal organization aiming to exploit a young prodigy as a mental calculator to dodge digital trails, it presents an intriguing premise for a Jason Statham film. We don’t often see such quality, so savor it while it lasts (for 95 minutes). And when will Catherine Chang receive her Oscar?
6
‘The Fate of the Furious’ (2017)
Tomatometer: 67%
In “The Fate of the Furious,” Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) appears to be working against his team. The reason behind this seemingly uncharacteristic behavior is that he has been coerced by a cyber-terrorist named Cypher (Charlize Theron). Fortunately, the group eventually discovers the situation and works together to resolve it.
Foe Turned Friend
The film “Fate of the Furious” is renowned for several aspects, particularly the thrilling airborne fight scene featuring Jason Statham battling bad guys while carrying Dom’s baby. With a staggering production cost of $270 million, it ranked among the priciest movies ever produced, and the spectacle was nothing short of impressive. Critics lauded its presentation, concluding that “The Fate of the Furious ushers in a fresh chapter for the franchise, driven by the same captivating camaraderie among actors and exhilarating action that fans have grown accustomed to.
5
‘Hobbs &Shaw’ (2019)
Tomatometer: 67%
In the spinoff of the Fast & Furious series, titled Hobbs & Shaw, the storyline takes a turn towards science fiction. Here, we meet Brixton Lore (played by Idris Elba), who is not just an ordinary soldier but a cybernetically enhanced one. In his possession is a deadly virus that could potentially eliminate half of the world’s population. The task of stopping him falls upon former adversaries: Luke Hobbs (portrayed by Dwayne Johnson), a lawman, and Deckard Shaw (played by Statham), a former special forces member.
One of the Best Sequels in Recent Years
In this captivating spinoff, we see a unique twist as cars take a backseat, making room for science and human chemistry. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes generally approved of it, stating that “Hobbs & Shaw may not reach the heights of the franchise’s top performances, but manages to get good traction from its compatible leads and extravagant action scenes.” It’s intriguing to think about a follow-up with these two stars; they certainly seem destined for more collaborations.
4
‘The Expendables 2’ (2012)
Tomatometer: 68%
In “The Expendables 2,” Jean-Claude Van Damme plays the antagonist, going by the fitting name of Jean Vilain. The writers may not have been too creative with his character, but it’s hard to complain given the result. After he assassinates one of the mercenaries, the team tracks him down across Europe and discovers a plot to illicitly peddle stolen plutonium.
The Big Boys are Back
In this passage, Chuck Norris humorously shares a tale about a cobra that perished after biting him. The general sentiment among Redditors is: “Taut, violent, and self-deprecatingly funny, The Expendables 2 delivers the action-packed entertainment that fans of these genres have come to anticipate, with both its strengths and weaknesses on display.” What’s truly remarkable is how, despite being accustomed to headlining roles, none of the actors interfere with each other. Instead, they all efficiently utilize their limited screen time.
3
‘Fast & Furious 6’ (2013)
Tomatometer: 71%
The team is enjoying the high life, akin to “La Dolce Vita,” in Fast & Furious 6, thanks to the successful $100 million heist. However, their leisure time is abruptly interrupted when DSS agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) returns once more. But unlike his previous encounters, he’s not interested in arresting them this time. Instead, he needs their assistance in apprehending another gang of expert mercenary drivers.
Furious Again
In the climactic scenes of Furious 6, Statham makes his entrance in an incredibly cool manner, arguably his finest non-combat performance yet. Critics commended the movie for expanding on the successful blockbuster blueprint that propelled Fast 5 to both critical and commercial acclaim. To put it simply, the tension is higher than ever, and the action sequences are relentless. Kudos to Justin Lin!
2
‘Furious 7’ (2015)
Tomatometer: 82%
In Furious 7, the team encounters Deckard Shaw, the brutal brother of the previously defeated Owen Shaw, portrayed by Jason Statham. This character is so ruthless that he single-handedly demolishes a hospital. However, the alliance between Hobbs and Dominic Toretto’s crew could be too formidable for a villain accustomed to having things go his way.
Furious One More Time
In terms of this film series, it holds the top spot for being the most highly acclaimed thus far, and that’s no surprise given its abundance of unforgettable scenes, such as Dom versus Deckard’s epic street brawl. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes commended it for delivering “a new serving of exhilarating action with a dash of emotional depth,” emphasizing that “Furious 7 pushes the franchise forward in multiple aspects.” Additionally, there’s a touching homage to Paul Walker, as well as an outstanding musical tribute in Wiz Khalifa’s song “See You Again.
1
‘Spy’ (2017)
Tomatometer: 82%
In the movie titled “Spy”, the desk-bound CIA agent Susan Cooper, portrayed by Melissa McCarthy, is thrust into action when her partner Bradley Fine, played by Jude Law, is fatally taken down by the infamous arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne). Assisting her in this dangerous mission is the unpredictable agent Rick Ford (Jason Statham).
Statham Has Never Been This Funny
In a surprising twist, even tough guy Statham could’ve been asked to lighten up – until “Spy”. Here, he breaks free from his usual serious roles and it’s something you’ll hope he does more often. His comedic timing with McCarthy is spot-on, perhaps because she brought out the funny in him. Critics lauded the film for its humor that was both broad and forward-thinking. They also enjoyed the numerous laughs it offered throughout.
