Reacher’s Richard Beck Reveals What It Was Like To Punch Alan Ritchson Hard In The Chest

By the end of the 2025 TV lineup, viewers will likely have witnessed numerous fight scenes on television. However, most fights are usually quite lopsided compared to the encounters shown in a typical season of Reacher. (Although Season 3 has yet to feature Alan Ritchson‘s major fight against the massive antagonist portrayed by Olivier Richters.) It was quite entertaining, then, to see Reacher instructing Johnny Berchtold’s character, Richard Beck, in the art of fighting.

To put it straightforwardly, the scene in “Dominique” was more about Reacher giving orders than a high-intensity workout like Rocky’s training montage. However, when discussing his character’s development in Season 3 with TopMob, Berchtold mentioned that he did indeed have a chance to throw a punch at his well-built co-star. Surprisingly, the punch didn’t go as planned. When I enquired if sparring with Alan Ritchson boosted his confidence enough to overpower the actor, Berchtold shared that it didn’t exactly fill him with that level of certainty.

In another words, I am confident that I could handle that guy [laughs]. However, let me clarify this by saying, when Reacher challenges Richard to hit him, it’s important to remember that such scenes are always done safely on a film set, with safety personnel present. Although we rehearsed the chest punch a few times, Alan (Richard) reassured me that I could strike him, and after some hesitation, I did.

It’s quite reasonable why the new Reacher actor might have felt apprehensive about following Ritchson’s advice to throw a mock punch, even though he knew it was meant for Ritchson’s chest and not his face. After all, it’s unusual and potentially uncomfortable to engage in any form of violence, even imagined, with a friendly colleague.

Johnny Berchtold went on to explain why he only took one crack at a legitimate punch, saying:

During the encounter, I delivered a powerful punch to his chest. Not even an inch shifted on him. Incredible as it sounds, I was taken aback by the impact myself. Yet, given that, I am confident that I could handle that individual.

In a somewhat legendary manner, you never hit the target if you don’t even attempt the shot. However, if that shot happens to be a punch aimed at Alan Ritchson‘s chest, it might be wiser not to take it at all. After all, it would likely save your hand from potential injury.

Interestingly enough, Alan Ritchson once mentioned that he had sparred with a co-actor who was considerably larger than him. Given the usual circumstances, it’s not something one would expect on any typical film set. His colossal stature, when contrasted with Tom Cruise’s, played a significant role in making him an ideal choice for the role.
