It’s astonishing to think that the 1985 college comedy “Real Genius,” directed by Martha Coolidge, will be turning 40 this August. Starring Val Kilmer in one of his most memorable roles, this film didn’t make a significant impact at the box office initially but has since become a cult classic, particularly for those who grew up watching HBO and Cinemax in the mid-80s.
The film centers around a band of misfits at a university reminiscent of Cal Tech, who embark on various pranks and construct a skating rink within their dormitory. They torment the antagonist Kent (Robert Prescott), pursue enigmatic character Hollyfeld (portrayed by Jon Gries from “The White Lotus”), venture into steam tunnels, and in a climactic event, sabotage their professor’s house. By channeling a military laser into his entrance and inflating an enormous popcorn container, they cause the popcorn to burst through windows and eventually demolish the walls as it expands. This spectacular scene remains a favorite even after many years, and I only recently discovered how the stunt was accomplished in a time before digital effects. As it turns out, here’s the answer to my curiosity.
Yes, The Popcorn Was Real
As per William Atherton, famously known for his portrayal of Professor Jerry Hathaway (a character greatly disliked by many) and a frequent presence on our screens in the 1980s, the team spent months preparing popcorn during the filming process. In an interview with AV Club in 2010, he disclosed this interesting fact.
For approximately three months, there was a popcorn-popping machine operating continuously in the studio, its sole purpose being to produce popcorn throughout the entire day.
Additionally, there were other concerns. Releasing large quantities of chemically-treated popcorn onto the streets near the filming location could pose risks to local wildlife. As Atherton clarified, this was because the popcorn was treated to prevent it from igniting.
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself in a bit of a predicament. The freshly popped popcorn needed special care, as it could potentially catch fire if not treated properly. To avoid any mishaps, I had to keep an eye out and ensure those playful birds didn’t mistake the popcorn for their next meal. After all, it was coated with fire retardant to prevent any unfortunate incidents, such as bird casualties or potential intoxication.
Since they opted for realistic effects, the scene and spectacle seemed incredibly vivid. The cascade of popcorn spilling from the house remains an indelible memory and a witty, amusing finale for the film. Atherton shared details about the intricacies involved in executing the stunt.
In those days, such activities were quite traditional. Today, likely, they would be done digitally, but back then, you needed to manually prepare popcorn, transport it in a vehicle, and haul it all the way out to the valley.

The Laser Effect Isn’t Possible
Upon revisiting the scene, it brought back memories of an old “Mythbusters” episode where they investigated if lasers could pop popcorn and how fast and much could be achieved. Although they demonstrated that a laser could get a kernel hot enough to pop, the expanding popcorn didn’t generate enough force to shatter windows or walls like in the movie. Furthermore, there isn’t a large enough laser available to pop such amounts of corn at that speed.
Ultimately, personal preference aside, the scene from Real Genius is undeniably one of the greatest finales in any ’80s comedy – comparable to the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man scene in Ghostbusters and the climactic one-ski race in Better Off Dead. This movie is a timeless classic that sadly isn’t produced anymore.
