It is sad to announce that Rebekah Del Rio, famously known for her performance at Club Silencio in David Lynch’s movie Mulholland Drive, passed away at the age of 57.
At her residence on June 23rd, it was confirmed by the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office that Del Rio had passed away. The exact cause of her death remains undetermined at this time.
She started her journey as a singer-songwriter in Chula Vista, California, where she was born on July 10, 1967. Her career took off in the San Diego music scene, leading her to relocate to Los Angeles in 1989.
For the first time, she met Lynch through Brian Loucks, a music agent. After making the introduction, Del Rio played some music for him which led to an invitation from Loucks for her to join a scene in the movie Mulholland Drive.
It was through Brian Loucks, a music agent, that she first came across Lynch. After being introduced by Del Rio, he had her perform for him which resulted in an invitation to be part of a scene in the film Mulholland Drive.
At their meeting, she performed a version of “Llorando,” a Spanish adaptation of Roy Orbison’s “Crying,” that significantly impacted the Club Silencio scene in the film. In this scene, Del Rio passionately sang the song and her character fainted near the end of the performance. This instance demonstrated that her character was lip-syncing, however, Del Rio disclosed to IndieWire in 2022 that she sang the entire song during every take.
She explained, “During each take, I chose to sing along as I felt compelled to convey that very emotion through my vibrato in my throat. Additionally, I desired for the lovely actresses sitting in the balcony, Laura Harring and Naomi Watts, to witness it live. Since they were present while I was performing my scene, I sang specifically to them. Interestingly, David prefers using live microphones when filming, and he’s always attentive.
After her memorable scene in the movie, Del Rio showcased her singing abilities in films like “Southland Tales” and “Sin City”. In 2017, she collaborated with Lynch once more for “Twin Peaks: The Return”, where she made an appearance in a single episode to perform.
