As someone who’s spent countless holiday seasons huddled around the television, eagerly awaiting the arrival of festive films that would warm my heart and tickle my funny bone, I must say that “Red One” has become an unexpected gift this year. Despite the naysayers and their seemingly misguided critiques, this film has managed to captivate millions of viewers worldwide, making it Amazon MGM’s biggest opening ever on their streaming platform.
Regardless of receiving harsh criticism from critics (can’t they tell it’s Christmas?!) and a low rating of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s has now set a significant record on . The holiday-themed action movie has become Amazon MGM’s most successful opening on their streaming platform, attracting “over 50 million worldwide viewers” within its first four days of release.
Essentially, Red One has dethroned Jake Gyllenhaal and Doug Liman’s Road House remake from the top spot in terms of viewership on Amazon. However, it’s important to note that while Amazon announced this significant achievement for Red One, they didn’t provide clear details about how they arrived at this number. On the other hand, Netflix and Disney+ calculate viewer numbers by dividing a film’s runtime by the total number of viewers. This leads to speculation whether Amazon is inflating the success of Red One to make their substantial investment appear more fruitful than it actually is.
As I mull over that thought, it’s clear that Jennifer Salke, the boss at Amazon MGM Studios, stands firm in her support for the theatrical release. She sees the large audience numbers as proof that their strategy has been successful.
I’m thrilled to express that each cinematic project we embark on is unique, and I’m deeply appreciative of our collaboration with filmmakers in crafting the perfect approach to ensure maximum visibility. For Red One, it was clear that our strategy should encompass a theatrical debut accompanied by an advertising blitz, attracting crowds to theaters and sparking interest among viewers who later streamed the movie on Prime Video. It’s gratifying to witness the success of our efforts, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the entire filmmaking team and cast for their invaluable contribution to this achievement.
‘Red One’ Has Caused a Huge Rift Between Critics & Audiences
Under the direction of Jake Kasdan, “Red One” is set to feature Chris Evans in the role of Jack O’Malley, a bounty hunter, with Callum Drift, portrayed by an undisclosed actor, serving as the head of North Pole security. The ensemble cast also includes Kiernan Shipka, known for “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” Lucy Liu from “Kill Bill,” Mary Elizabeth Ellis of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” Nick Kroll, Kristofer Hivju, and Wesley Kimmel, as well as Bonnie Hunt as Mrs. Claus and J.K. Simmons playing the role of Santa Claus. The script was penned by Chris Morgan, while Hiram Garcia provided the original story concept.
Title “Red One” follows an intriguing narrative about a kidnapped Santa Claus and the Head of Security at the North Pole, who join forces with the world’s most notorious bounty hunter for a thrilling, humor-filled adventure across the globe to rescue Christmas. This action-comedy has sparked a significant disagreement between critics and viewers, with the former giving it a low score of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes while the latter have enthusiastically labeled the film “verified hot,” awarding it a high rating of 90% on the Popcornmeter.
One critic who did find a lot to like in Red One is MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman, who said, “Red One offers a surprisingly clever take on Christmas mythology. The big-budget action-comedy delivers the requisite popcorn entertainment with visual splendor, but also succeeds in building its own new universe with truly memorable characters.”
