Discussions surrounding the much-anticipated finale of “Stranger Things” are reaching new heights as we approach its release in a few short months. With speculation swirling about the storyline and how the series will conclude, it’s only natural for such a popular show. Nevertheless, while the show has achieved great success, its video game adaptations haven’t quite matched the same pace.
The company responsible for creating popular series like “The Walking Dead” and “The Wolf Among Us,” known as Telltale Games, initially developed a game based on “Stranger Things.” This game followed their usual episodic format and had a distinctive cel-shaded visual style. Regrettably, this project was never released due to the unfortunate closure of Telltale Studios.
So, what was that Stranger Things Telltale game all about? Let’s take a look.
Originally planned for release in 2019, three years following its Netflix debut in 2016, the Telltale game adaptation had been proposed in the same year as the show’s premiere. However, the initial concept, focusing on a game based on the popular series, was initially turned down by executives who allegedly felt it was merely about kids riding bikes without fully grasping its potential greatness.
A few years passed, and with Telltale receiving approval from Netflix, the Stranger Things game started to take shape. However, this dream soon crumbled after mass layoffs at Telltale and their subsequent studio shutdown. Later on, Netflix announced that the game had been scrapped and they were instead focusing on other projects for the franchise.
In 2018, two years following the game’s cancellation announcement, old footage of the game started appearing on the internet. The plot seemed to be situated between Seasons 1 and 2, with Will Byers as the central figure. The gameplay mechanics appeared similar to other Telltale titles like The Walking Dead, enabling players to traverse areas, manipulate objects, and progress the story. Some of these clips also displayed nerve-wracking first-person segments where the Demogorgon was stalking Will.

As a gaming enthusiast, it’s truly disappointing that the promising Telltale title got canceled. With their renowned interactive storytelling, we could’ve written our very own Stranger Things saga, making choices that would shape not just an episode, but potentially an entire Season 2, leaving a lasting impact on the narrative. I can’t help but wonder if Netflix was considering a “choose your own adventure” style for Stranger Things at one point, perhaps diverting the project towards Black Mirror: Bandersnatch instead, as a creative alternative when the game fell through.

Unfortunately, it seems the Stranger Things Telltale game has vanished and likely won’t return. With the increasing costs of licensing the Stranger Things IP and Telltale’s current weaker state, its chances of reemergence appear slim. As the studio focuses on future projects such as The Wolf Among Us Season 2, a release date remains elusive, causing concern among fans who fear it may meet the same fate.
