Renata Brandão on Expanding Brazilian Powerhouse Conspiracao Filmes Across Latin America

As a fellow gamer who appreciates the dynamics of the global entertainment industry, I can’t help but be awestruck by the journey of Renata Brandão, the fearless CEO of Conspiração Filmes. Her story is one of passion, determination, and an unyielding drive to push boundaries, not just within Brazil, but across Latin America.

Renata Brandão, who’s already a well-recognized and impactful figure in the Brazilian media scene, took over as CEO of Conspiração Filmes, Brazil’s leading production company, in 2016. Since then, her efforts have resulted in 10 International Emmy nominations for their programming – making Conspiração Filmes the Latin American company with the most nominations. Under Brandão’s leadership, the business has also grown its reach internationally.

She mentioned that a significant step forward is our upcoming Spanish adaptation of the popular Brazilian soap opera, ‘Under Pressure.’ Additionally, we’re working on a soap series to be filmed overseas. Our aim is to extend Conspiração’s comprehensive studio setup from Brazil throughout Latin America. This expansion involves not just local production but also fostering opportunities for co-productions and merging Latin American narrative styles.

In the world of cinema, Conspiração collaborated on the production of Walter Salles’ Oscar-contending film, “I’m Still Here,” which represented Brazil in the category of Best International Feature for the 2025 Academy Awards.

Among the distinguished women recognized by The Hollywood Reporter in 2024 as influential figures in global television, Brandão discussed the hurdles confronted by the TV industry, especially for women who find themselves in a predominantly male-dominated profession. She offered insights into potential solutions that could promote equality in all aspects of the business.

What was your first job in the business?

As a gamer, my foray into the world of entertainment was more of a fortunate twist of fate than a deliberate career choice. With a degree in international relations, I had been immersed in the pursuit of diplomacy, but destiny had other plans. A friend invited me to collaborate on a movie titled “The Passenger,” which I initially agreed to merely as a show of support. However, as the production unfolded, I found myself captivated by the industry’s magic. This newfound passion led me to Los Angeles, where I further honed my skills at UCLA. Upon my return to Brazil, I joined Conspiração in 2006, marking the beginning of an incredible journey that would become my legacy.

What was the biggest professional challenge you faced this past year?

Over the past year, my most significant work hurdle has revolved around spearheading the globalization of Conspiração. With over three decades of experience within Brazil and receiving ten International Emmy nominations, we’ve embarked on a new venture to extend our business into Mexico, focusing on creating content in Spanish. A notable achievement is our forthcoming Spanish-language remake of the highly popular Brazilian TV series Under Pressure, and we’re also planning to produce a soap opera abroad. Our aim is to replicate Conspiração’s comprehensive studio setup from Brazil across Latin America, not just for local production but also fostering co-productions that blend Latin American storytelling. Our objective is to extend our reach beyond Brazil, by adapting successful Brazilian intellectual properties and developing original content in Mexico, all while navigating an intriguing yet intricate challenge.

What do you see as your biggest achievement of the past year?

One significant accomplishment we’ve had this past year is collaborating with partners VideoFilmes and RT Features on the production of “I’m Still Here,” directed by Walter Salles. This film is now Brazil’s contender for an Oscar in the Best International Feature category, showcasing the dedication and hard work our team invested in it.

What current industry trend do you hope to soon see the back of?

Over the past few years, there’s been a lively discussion about Video on Demand regulations in Brazil, with many different viewpoints offering valuable insights. Each opinion has its own strengths, and I’m excited to see where this conversation goes, aiming for an outcome that fairly considers all involved interests. As one of the crucial topics influencing our industry right now, I eagerly anticipate a resolution that enables the market to progress smoothly.

What show, currently on air, would you love to have made?

White Lotus. And I hope Mike White brings the series to Brazil very soon.

Could you tell me about the most significant obstacle faced as a woman in an industry that remains predominantly male?

As a female gamer, I often find myself needing to consistently demonstrate my skills and expertise in this predominantly male field, which can sometimes lead to unfair judgment and close scrutiny. However, I’ve learned that maintaining my resilience and fostering a powerful network of support is the best way forward.

What needs to be done to improve equality and diversity within the industry?

Enhancing equality and diversity necessitates addressing it from various aspects. Initially, it’s about making opportunities more accessible: fostering mentorship, providing scholarships, and advocating for inclusive hiring, both in leadership roles and across all positions, whether they are in front of or behind the scenes. We should actively reshape the narratives we create. Narratives hold power, and authenticity is crucial here.

What advice would you give young women just entering the industry?

As a dedicated gamer, I can relate this to my gaming journey. Mastering a game isn’t just about skill; it’s about an unyielding passion that pushes me through the countless hours of practice and failures. The filmmaking world mirrors this in its toughness and competition. Yet, that burning obsession within will propel you forward through the challenges ahead.

What do you watch for pleasure?

I tune into Brazilian series to get a direct glimpse of our global contributions. Comprehending the narratives and viewpoints we’re disseminating worldwide, as well as their impact on international audiences, is crucial.

What do you do to unwind?

Swim in the sea.
