As a gamer with a keen eye for art and a heart full of curiosity, I find myself drawn to the captivating world of Renell Medrano, showcased in her retrospective exhibition at WSA. With roots deeply entwined in the Dominican culture, her lens-based language resonates profoundly within me, echoing the pulsating beats of my own heritage.
Renell Medrano’s retrospective exhibition, showcased by WeTransfer and Water Street Projects, will be held at WSA from now until November 2, 2024. This is her first major hometown presentation in more than five years. The Bronx-born photographer’s work explores her Dominican heritage, focusing on themes of renewal and homecoming. Her unique style, expressed through photography, offers a personal perspective on these ideas.
LAMBÓN explores an extensive variety of editorial endeavors and partnerships, as well as heartfelt personal shoots from travels to Egypt, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. Her artistry infuses a rejuvenating style into entertainment and fashion, capturing the essence of artists like Kendrick Lamar and Solange with sincere authenticity and dramatic finesse.
The title of this show is derived from a term in Dominican slang, which means either “freeloader” or “parasite.” In a nod to groundbreaking work that remains true to its roots, the WSA notes: “LAMBÓN addresses a society that unceasingly exploits the creative freedom they’ve been granted. Medrano sets a boundary and poses a question to viewers: will you be a leader or a lambón?
Amidst the thrill of a fresh gaming level, anticipation mounts for the debut of ICE, Medrano’s inaugural magazine. Drawn from the narrative threads of her 2019 movie “PELUCA,” this forthcoming project is crafted as a virtual sanctuary where women can mirror their authentic selves and delve into the mesmerizing surrealism hidden within our daily routines.
