Report: Amid Trend-Chasing, Single-Player Games Are Still The Preference Of Most Gamers Globally

As a seasoned gamer who has weathered countless storms of online toxicity and the volatile nature of multiplayer games, I wholeheartedly embrace the supremacy of the single-player genre. With my battle-scarred gaming rig and weary fingers that have tasted victory in countless solo adventures, I can attest to the unparalleled joy these titles bring. The competitive edge and community toxicity often associated with multiplayer games are a distant memory, replaced by the immersive narratives and captivating worlds of single-player titles.

Story Highlights

  • As per a new research, single-player titles continue to be users’ preferred genre of games.
  • New single-player titles come out every year, with of them having something unique to offer.
  • Despite humongous player counts, online game is often disliked due to its volatile nature.

In the world of gaming, whether it’s dealing with the cutthroat competition in multiplayer games or the negative influence of online toxicity, the genre of single-player games remains undisputedly popular. A recent report by MIDiA Research, a well-respected analysis platform, indicates that approximately 53% of gamers opt for relaxing with a single-player game rather than engaging in multiplayer gaming.

It’s important to mention that MIDiA gathered data from a survey conducted in both Q1 2024 and Q1 2023. The survey was administered in various countries, including the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Poland, Turkey, and South Africa.

Report: Amid Trend-Chasing, Single-Player Games Are Still The Preference Of Most Gamers Globally

In 2023, research found that most gamers dislike playing multiplayer games if they are perceived as hosting a harmful or unpleasant community. Based on my personal experiences, I can confirm this result is quite accurate.

7 out of every 10 players stated that they abstain from playing specific games due to the negative connotations surrounding their communities.

If the common trend is true, why do so many people, even grandmas, aim to create a live service game? Simply put: Profitability. While the potential earnings are substantial if executed correctly, crafting an effective live service game is no small feat. Arrowhead Studio managed it successfully, reaping the rewards of their hard work. However, most other developers struggle to achieve the same success.

A recent (and the most applicable) example is Concord, followed by Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and others.

With Games Like Elden Ring And God Of War Ragnarok, I Don’t Wonder Why

Report: Amid Trend-Chasing, Single-Player Games Are Still The Preference Of Most Gamers Globally

The genre for solo players has consistently grown over time, offering increasingly captivating experiences each year. In 2024, games like Black Myth: Wukong, Stellar Blade, Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, and the soon-to-be-released Silent Hill 2 are definitely worth paying attention to. Just as 2023 introduced us to Baldur’s Gate 3, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Tears of the Kingdom from Nintendo.

These games have the ability to leave lasting impressions if you invest sufficient time in them. It’s quite clear why this playing style emerges, considering the high-quality content we’re consistently exposed to in the single-player domain.
