Resident Alien Star Alan Tudyk’s “Secret” Superman Role Revealed: All About Superman Robot #4

Although Alan Tudyk is popularly known for playing the role of a resident alien on TV, he’s also set to star alongside one of the most recognized aliens in popular culture. In the upcoming “Superman” movie, Tudyk will lend his voice to Superman Robot #4, a well-known robot assistant to the hero who works at his Fortress of Solitude.

In early June, James Gunn, who is directing a new film for DC’s superhero movie franchise, revealed information on Superman Robot #4 and actor Alan Tudyk on his Instagram account.

In the video, Gunn referred to the robotic prop as “Superman Robot Number 4”. He emphasized that this is its official title or name in legal terms.

Tudyk expressed his astonishment at the complexity of the animatronic, while one of the creators proudly declared that “this fellow has an impressive array of movements.

In the video, Tudyk can be spotted donning a motion-capture outfit, hinting at his involvement in live acting for sequences where Superman Robot #4 is to be digitally rendered.

What are Superman Robots?

In the forthcoming “Superman” film, Superman Robot Number 4 is among several robots that help the Man of Steel while he’s stationed in his Arctic refuge.

In one of the movie trailers, we see the robots aiding an injured Superman by exposing him to the healing energy of Earth’s yellow sun rays, restoring his superpowers. In another preview, the robots are seen engaged in combat with an unwanted intruder.

As a dedicated gamer, I find the design of these robots reminiscent of the iconic Superman from “All-Star Superman,” a comic that encapsulates the essence of fun and optimism embodied by this legendary hero. In this comic, written brilliantly by Grant Morrison and beautifully illustrated by Frank Quitely, Superman’s robots were faithful companions. Much like those, Tudyk’s Superman Robot #4 seems to be a loyal ally as well.

In a funny Instagram post showcasing his acting method, Tudyk quips, “His speech sounds like mine but with clearer enunciation.

Alan Tudyk’s Voice Acting Work

In other roles, Superman Robot #4 isn’t Alan Tudyk’s debut in voice acting – he has previously lent his voice to robots, most notably K-2SO in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and later in the TV series “Andor”. Interestingly, he has also given voice to Superman himself, portraying the character in the animated film “Justice League: War”. Among his other notable voice acting jobs are parts in “Big Hero Six”, “Moana”, the live-action version of “Aladdin”, and “The Electric State”.

As a devoted fan, I find that Alan Tudyk’s role as Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle in the ongoing series “Resident Alien,” which airs on both USA Network and SYFY, complements his performance as Superman Robot #4 quite nicely. In this show, currently in its fourth season, Tudyk portrays an alien who lands in Patience, Colorado, adopting the guise of a human doctor. Harry is often sarcastic and given to dramatic flourishes, but over time, he comes to regard Earth as his new home. Although Superman Robot #4 might not be as eccentric as Harry, there’s still a common thread in the dry wit, and in how both “Resident Alien” and the upcoming film combine humor, emotion, and classic sci-fi elements.

Instead of Superman gracing movie screens on July 11, you can enjoy Alan Tudyk every week by tuning in for new episodes of the fourth season of “Resident Alien” on USA Network every Friday night at 11 p.m. Episodes will be broadcast simultaneously on SYFY, and will be accessible to stream on Peacock a week later.
