As a seasoned collector of timepieces with a penchant for unique artistry and cultural influences, I find myself utterly captivated by the Ressence TYPE 8 INDIGO. The collaboration between Ressence and BUAISOU, masters of traditional Japanese indigo dyeing, has resulted in a watch that transcends timekeeping and delves deep into the realm of artisanal craftsmanship.
Ressence has introduced an eye-catching new watch model, influenced by the ancient Japanese method of indigo dyeing – the TYPE 8 INDIGO. This captivating timepiece marks a significant milestone for Ressence’s collaboration with their long-term partner in Tokyo, Shellman, who is currently expanding their retail operations. Additionally, it serves as Ressence’s contribution to The Indigo Project that Shellman oversees.
With great dedication to the theme, the Type 8 Indigo model from Ressence adopted a unique and artisan-style method to include indigo in its design. Ressence partnered with experts at BUAISOU to highlight the subtle charm of natural indigo by using hand-dyed silk thread on the watch’s dial. This technique is seldom used in watchmaking, and for Ressence, it represents a new milestone as they incorporate an Arts & Métiers craft for the first time in one of their watches, as explained by Ressence’s founder, Benoît Mintiens.
The final dial exudes a distinctive charm, shaped by a pattern that combines both organically flowing lines and structured geometry, much like delicate embroidery work. Since it’s dyed naturally, the thread doesn’t have an even color throughout, resulting in a subtle gradation similar to a gradient.
This version, encased in grade 5 titanium and featuring a case diameter of 42.9mm, is part of the TYPE 8 family. It boasts a 36-hour power reserve and operates on the Ressence Orbital Convex System 8 module, which includes a customized automatic base caliber, patented by Ressence.
